I have a new Senegal parrot that we just got yesterday. She was previously owned by a very sweet lady who said she is very tame and has never bitten anyone. We got her all set up in her cage yesterday and I took her out today and she bit me really hard and broke the skin in four places. She bit twice. I put her back in her cage and now am terrified!

Do I need to let her sit in her cage without trying to hold her for a few days? Should I have her in her own room in the quiet for a while or should I have her cage uncovered and next to me?

I have read a ton, but keep getting mixed advice. Please help!

Thanks so much!

Seems like she needs time to adjust to you and her new world. Is her cage located in a place where she an observe you but still be in her own space? And if she bit you badly I'd wait a day or two and then start approaching her very slowly and tentatively while talking to her and letting her trust grow :)

I agree with the advice given. Senegal parrots in my opinion are the Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde of the parrot world because they will be sweet and fun and then all of a sudden they will decide to try and take a chunk out of you.

No matter how tame a new bird is touted to be, YOU still have to build a bond with that bird on your own. This can be accomplished by sitting near their cage, talk, read and sing to them with the cage door open and let them come to you.

Good luck with your new addition, it will just take time.

as said above,
but did you put your hand into her cage?? put a perch onto the door an when you let her out stand and wait for her to step on it, before opening the door, you can ask her to step up off that, or let her climb the cage

most important learn to read her body language, they can tell you loads about how they are feeling etc once you get use to reading feather position, stance etc

simple ones are

turn of the head = simple no or not interested

walking away = really don't want to

crouch (sometimes with a hiss) = i'm going to bite you, walk away now!

the bow, beak is pointing down (not to be confused with the crouch as a crouch the beak is forward and canbe open) please please please give me a head rub, but for now give short head rubs, do not rub down her back as that is sexual for them, watch her eyes pin

eye pinning can mean they are interested or annoyed, so take into consideration the body language
my nut was very sneaky, she would give off the bow etc and when i went to rub her head ZAP

also 10/12hours sleep, dark quiet are of house, i cover nut, a good pellet an fresh fruit and veg diet (NO APPLE SEEDS, ADVACADO, CHOCOLATE, ASPERAGUS there are other things that canbe toxic to our birds, so always check new foods!) make sure she has supper before putting her to bed, her morning poop should be rather considerable in size

it does take time, i still get bit from nut, nothing major now, but she knows i am afraid of the bite an sometime i just have to stand up to her, as she will pretend to bite me or try bullying me, but this is part of our relationship, as i am not her fav person, but as time has passed, she now knows she is safe with me, we use to bath/shower together, but she just wants to drink hot water now, so she gets spritzed, will take an afternoon nap with me, but she perches above my head now as if on watch. likes to check out what i've put into her toy box, on a small coffee table when i am on computer
scurries like a rat across the floor for toes still, rolls onto her back when she is feeling uber playfull, but she does give out a harder bite when she does this as she is excited

but it is all worth it, she is a joy to be with, even when she is trying to terrorise me, please keep us up dated and welcome to the forum
