Hi,

We recently got an indian ringneck, believed to be a 20 month old male but Im sure only time will tell. He seems ok to a degree, he will take fruit from us by hand through the bars and sometimes when we go into the cage. We are in the slow process of taming him and just wanted a few pointers.

My first big question is, can we taim him if we have a budgie in the same room? I know it can be harder with 2 of the exact same bird, but wasnt sure about different types.

Second question is sometimes when I talk to him, he kind of makes a low growling type noise then lunges forward hissing at me. Any ideas? Think it might have been my glasses so keeping them off when I go to him.

Thanks in advance and any advice is greatly appreciated.

At 20 months old you have someones baby that they couldn't sell. Most likely sitting unhandled in a cage. When buying older birds you pretty much get what you see.Yes you can turn things around but it will take lots of time and effort on your part and you might never have a cuddle bug.Be happy with any "baby steps" you make when taming him. I would suggest target/clicker training as a hands off way to better socialize your pet and gain some trust. If he's not showing a lot of interest in the other bird then it's not an issue,if he is you might need to move him somewhere else when training/ handling him.I'd also keep the sessions short and leave him wanting more of your attention, don't keep going until he gets bored or uninterested. Keep all your interactions short and leave him wanting more of your attention. Many peeps will tell you to sit by his cage and talk, sing, read a book and all that's fine. Keep the "in your face" ,"invading your space" interactions short, you don't want him striking and driving you away,If he accepts treats fine, give him one and say "good bird" and leave him be,don't keep pushing.End each interaction on a good note,if he's striking at you to drive you away, stand there until he calms and then quietly leave.Good luck i'm sure things can be improved. Ooops, welcome to the forum and hope to see you around to learn more about your new fid.

Thank you very much for the quick reply. We got him from a young girl who obviously didnt know what she was doing with him. His cage was very dirty and all he has was a cheap budgie toy and a rag stuck in his cage. I think she wanted to look after him but didnt really know how. So I took his cage apart and scrubbed it, bought him several proper parrot toys and he seems to be happier. He does Love the budgie. We had him out with her while I cleaned the cage and He was slowly sidle up to her before she flew away just as he got close :) He did share some food with her also so i know he is of a sweet tempermant. Im honestly not to bothered if he talks or does tricks. I just want him to be happy and know he is safe and loved.

I do believe he may be trying to communicate with me. I had grapes and gave him some. About a minute later he made this cute little noise that he sometimes does, so I gave hime some more. And for about 20 minutes this went on with him coming to the side where we give him his fruit and him making his cute noise. Maybe small but its positive. Also taking my glasses off seems to have stopped him lunging at me :) Will update if we move any further forward.
