i know people can wean baby birds on human baby food (fruits and veggies),
but i was wondering if it was ok to feed Klaus that sort of food on a regular
basis. i thought instead of keep buying fruits and veggies, cleaning them up,
then dicing them.. i could just get the baby food cans and feed him whenever.

anything wrong with that, or should i just keep doing the regular fresh food
routine? if it's fine, then is there something i should watch out for? like different
brands or something.

I find it works nicely for birds that have aversions to veggies or fruit, mixing it into something to hide it. Probably fresh is best, but it's safe to use.

I asked my avian vet this same question. She said some of the baby food has too much iron in it for a bird. I started out feeding a combo of the low iron baby foods with crumbled corn bread. After attending several bird care classes I decided to invest in a food processor. Now I cook all the orange veggies and mix some green ones in plus the high calcium seeds like non hulled sesame seed and hemp seed. Oh I also add bee pollen at times. It is really not that involved but does take time. When finished with a batch I put it in containers and freeze.

One thing that I use Human baby food with is Birdie Bread. Get a cornbread mix, add 2 jars of baby food, put eggs in, as directed, except throw in shells & all into a blender first. Bake according to directions on cornbread mix. I usually use a fruit & a vegetable baby food. All of my fids love it.

I think the birds benefit from the chewing experience of fresh fruit and vegies... Also baby food in a jar is very expensive...

Mickey - Female U2 age unknown. DNA test came back...he is a SHE,

Chiquita 16 yr old Female U2 and Junior 16 yr old Male Grey
I use it because it is hard to get Mickey to eat a lot of the green veggies. He still is given fresh and cooked veggies everyday, however I also give baby food, because he loves it and will eat it without hesitation.

I also have a batch of "chop" (rice, barley, sweet potato, broccoli, carrots, peas, pumpkin, red/green peppers, hot peppers, and orzo pasta) which I froze in containers, and offer either morning or night.

I feel that I would rather feed the baby food and know he is getting the nutrition, than hope that he eats some of the veggies I'm offering. My vet felt that it was ok, but did recommend also offering the fresh.

That was exactly what I was doing to get orange veggies into my Blue Crown.

I will have to try this! We always have baby food on hand in case one of the tortoises get sick. Thanks!

Cool. I have left over baby food in the back of the cabinet. Good organic stuff too;) I'll try using in the birdie corn bread.
