Knowledgeable Members of Toucans ?

"Dixie"LSC2, and "Nico" Scarlet Macaw.
As far as I know they don't make good pets as they need really large flight cage as they don't do well in small cages.

I have spent some time researching toucans; I have heard that if you are capable of giving them the appropriate care they can be great pets. My local bird store has a rehomed toucanette at the store and she is adorable and charming.

There was a thing on tv once and said because of their requirements that many can't meet they don't make good pets that way, not their personally!

I'm not usually argumentative, but with the way I care for my parrots toucans really don't require more care, just different. Their diets are not the same as with parrots, but pellets are available along with fresh fruits. Space is defiantly a consideration since traditional cages are not made for the toucan's needs. Their large bill does not allow for climbing like in parrots so a larger foundation and perches that allow for hopping from branch to branch are necessary. Obviously the smaller toucanet requires less space than the larger toucans. Toucans cannot speak, but are often friendly and trainable. I am considering adding a toucan, I will only consider a rehome due to the great need of animals worldwide.

Emerald Forest sells Toucans, if your interested in buying one you can call them and they can help you with any information you might need. You can also go to BirdTricks.com - Public Figure - Dalton Gardens, ID | Facebook . Dave and Jamie have a Toucan and because their last toucan Fiji died young they are incredible careful with their current toucan Roco. They've done massive amounts of research and can definitely help you with any info you might need as well.

The are very exotic looking, sounds like their quite, can't bite hard and loveable. I haven't read much about being difficult ? Sounds like fruit and pellets are what they eat most.
VERY expensive though. Patty heard 10k ? !!! If that much, nope for us.
Yep, with that large beak, they need a large cage. (just like Patty does) lol JUST KIDDING HUN ! lol.....

I'm pretty sure only the Toco Toucan is 10,000. It's the largest toucan.
Smaller species and aracari are are way less expensive.

Dave and Jamie aren't just circus people, they train their birds to free fly and trick train. I'm not a fan of circuses either but I am a very big fan of birdtricks.com, great information and they love their birds.

We'll have to look at the less cost of the other species, but so far, none catch us like the Toco. Their color is a big factor. The other two below are also great looking, but the personality and manors are the most important.

From what I've learned by following Birdtricks and "The Three-cans" at adventuresintoucanland.com, they can be very similar to parrots in their activity level, playfulness, feisty attitude, and cuddliness. However, toucans are crazy expensive, and prone to being aggressive towards other species (which means they probably won't be good flockmates for parrots.) They don't live as long as parrots, and their diets are very sensitive - they do make softbill pellets, but being frugivores, you would need LOTS of fresh fruit. They're extremely susceptible to hemochromatosis, or iron storage disease, and their iron consumption needs to be very carefully monitored. The "yelling" species like Swainsons can be very loud, whereas the croaking species like Tocos and Keel-bills are very quiet. They don't have much biting power with their beak, however, they can do some damage with a peck or jab.
I think the most popular pet toucan is the green aracari, one of the smallest species of toucan. They're just adorable. I would love to consider an aracari someday.
