How do you control free flight

So Suki was already clipped when I bought her from the breeders. But I would really like for her to be able to fly for exercise and fun. So once her flight feathers grow back I am planning on letting her keep them. I only have one concern though. When she is confident and able to fly I'm worried she won't stay where I need her to stay. Like on her play stand or my shoulder. I'm worried she'll go wherever she wants all the time and that's a problem since my entire house isn't bird proof and there are a few dangerous things around I don't want her to get into or fly into.

I guess really my question is, once they can fly will she never sit still on her perch anymore? Or will she stay there. Will she constantly try to fly to me?

Sorry if this is a silly question but all the birds I've ever owned have been clipped so I don't know how flighted ones act.

Thanks in advance.

By having a flighted bird you've given her the choice. You need to work hard at this point to make her a happy independent bird. With that freedom comes a responsibly.

I'm sorry but ,,,, but if it's controlled,,, how could it be free flight? It's really no different than my clipped bird on her cage.If i don't learn how to raise a well socialized/adjusted bird then wouldn't she be just as miserable any time she wasn't on me ? Sure my Jake would rather be on me most all day, but she goes days without seeing me and she's fine, playing with her toys and interacting with the other birds, dogs, family members, etc.

I'm sorry if my question made it sound like I was being cruel to her. I want her to have that choice. She spends hours playing by herself as it is on her play stand. I'm sure I'm doing my best to raise her to be independent. I just don't know whether they fly constantly when they can that's all.

Thankyou for your reply henpecked, I am trying to do the best I can for her. If i didn't I would continue to clip her wings in order to control her easier. But I want her to be free, at least in the house. I won't be taking her outside thats for sure.

I would let her wings grow out and see how she behaves...

Max, my Alexandrine, got really cheeky around 9 months of age, and refused to step up to go back into his cage.... I clipped 3 feathers on each wing... He can still fly the length of the house, but not gain height... by clipping the first 3 feathers, he also lost a lot of navigational skills..

Max is starting to molt now, so hopefully he'll be flying again, soon.. He is just not happy with clipped wings...

Suki will be a lot happier, when allowed to fly... She won't be flying all the time, but she will use it as exercise, and you can't control her the same way you do now...

Thanks lene. I'm teaching her some easy control commands now while she is young so that when she starts flying I will have some control. Things like recalls and to hop down from things. All using positive reinforcements she is enjoying the lessons. So I will definitely let her wings grow back. I want her to enjoy the birth right of being a bird.

You can't have a more beautiful sight than a flying bird...
