I just noticed that Purl does not have a leg band, I thought all hand raised birds have one. At this point I don't think there is much I can do but just wondering if this will ever be an issue.

Thanks!

Um, there has been a post about this recently as some birds are required to have a band to prove that they are not wild caught, but really I think you'd only have an issue if you're trying to cross state lines. BUT that depends if the bird is supposed to be banded or not in the first place.

In regards to anything else, a band is really just so the breeder knows what baby is what! Also can help in retrieving a lost (not stolen) bird as if you jot down the band number you can use it as 'proof' that this is your bird. (I'd still recommend microchipping though!)

They aren't required here in Florida. I called a few local pet stores and shelters and asked, and got the same answer everywhere i called. I like double and triple checking. Try calling a few places and asking.

Not just that. Breeders also put the band on to prevent interbreeding. Babies from the same pair should not be allowed to breed, preventing sterile progeniture with genetic defects. When big breeders sell so many babies across the country, it can happen that one person ends up with 2 birds from the same breeder. One should know exactly where their bird come from, which is hard if you have a rescued bird with no way to trace its past. The band should show the breeder's initial, state and year of hatch at the very least and you should be able to tell if 2 birds from the same species come from the same place and enquire if they have the same parents.

The business card I received from the previous owner shows the breeder was in Florida. Thanks for that info...I feel better now.
