Falling down...

Our new Sun Conure, Mia, keeps "falling" off our shoulders. She just sort of flaps her way down and doesn't seem to be phased by it. We are not sure if she's doing it on purpose or not, but at one point, I sat down on the floor next to her, and she just walked around, exploring. It really seems to be on purpose, but I am not sure... Has anyone else experienced this? :orange:

Welcome to the forum.
Ar you sure she falls and doesn't jump/fly off? It sounds lie she is jumping/flying off so she can explore. Falling is a completely different thing, then she might have something wrong with her feet. Falling means she cant get the right grip and she slips off.

Thanks! I really think she's getting down on purpose to explore too. It just doesn't look too graceful... She does have clipped wings, though, so, she probably just doing the best she can. Thanks again!

Hahn's macaw, RIP George, Jenday Conure
Remember, if you allow the bahavior it can happen at very bad times. When my Hahn's launches himself like that I always put him back on his cage because I don't want to reinforce the bahavior.

How old is she? Is she newly clipped?

I always let ALL my babies learn how to fly first before clipping. Even after clipping they will try to attempt to fly over and over until they know they can anymore. One bad thing with a lot of breeders is the babies never had the chance to fledge and master their flight skills before their wings gets chopped off. Then they will constantly try to fly because that comes natural. She's going to jump off flopping cause she wants to fly, but she will learn eventually that she will need you to pick her up. When she flops off, walk away from her then sit down on the floor with her and call her over with your finger. She should walk right to you.
