hey guys. with my parrot coming within the year i am convincing my mom to get rid of her teflon cookware. she says she will be more encouraged to agree if i find a good alternitive. so what is there? i read that there is this stuff that HAS a non stick surface and is safe for birds because it doesnt contain teflon, it is made of something else, BUT.....it MAY cause cancer.....soooooo that aint happening....lol. she says no to cast iron because it is so heavy. will an uncoated aluminum work? i read about these aluminum pans/pots that are "hardened". could those work? i will try to give a link to those. what do you guys use besides cast iron?

Stainless isnt more expensive, actually it is less because no one wants the stainless because it is harder to clean than nonstick, at least it is less where I live.

We just got a nice set of stainless steel at Kohls pretty cheap. I really don't find it much harder to clean and it is nice to be able to use forks, knives and other metal utensils without worrying about scratches. The expensive ones now are the adonized it seems. For bakewear I use glass or aluminum.

Kudos on you for going to such lengths to educate your mom. Non stick cookware is bad for people too, from what I have heard they are going to stop making it in a few years. I like cast iron because it puts added iron into your food although it is quite heavy. I use SS as well and I just put it in the sink right after I use it with hot water and a drop of dish soap and by the time we're done eating and I'm ready to do the dishes everything comes right off. I'm really interested in the non stick ceramic pans like the orgreenic. It says right on their website that it's safe to use around pet birds and I've heard wonderful things about them. They seem to be a bit pricey but if they last as long as they are supposed then it's well worth it in my opinion.

i found pans called "ecolution" which are free of harmful fumes and non stick. i like them alot.
i also just got one of those pans on the infomercials called "orgreenics". no fumes and very nice non stick porcelin coating.

I'm leery of absolutely anything non-stick. I've seen the Orgreenics at a local store and they claim to be PTFE and something else free, but my Hubs knows a lot about science and he said they have to be using something, the question is what and have them been tested and proven bird safe? Most likely not.

I'll stick with aluminum backware, stainless steel and cast iron for cooking.

Same here.I use stainless and I find it easier to clean if you pour water in it while its still hot.

I'm not sure which one it was but one of those "green pans" had right in their FAQ's that they were safe around birds. Hard to believe they would come right out and say that if they didn't test it first. You would think if they didn't know for sure that they would have just omitted that part of the faqs.

I prefer stainless and cast iron equally. JUSt depends on what I cook. Here is a good argument for NOT using teflon..........at one time they used canaries in mines to detect toxic gases. If the birds died, they would evacuate the mine. Sad but true. So if teflon isn't good for birds then it isn't good for us to breathe either.
I know the orgreenics say they are safe for birds, but what other chemicals are they using to make them non stick? I almost bought one but just too afraid to chance it. If you put water in a stainless steel pan while it is hot, you will be amazed at how quickly it cleans up ......also you can get stainless steel cleaner and just wipe it around and it is shiny again.

Actually, my husband just heard of a bird that died recently from toxic fumes from bakeware that advertised itself to be "Bird Safe". So yeah, I'm not taking chances. I'll stick with what I know is 100% safe.

thanks guys. i cooked today. the non-sticking with the stainless steel went great!! nothing stuck at all!!!!! so +1 for me on that! but...cleaning was a very different story. it had burn marks from food "juices" and stuff(like you get most of the time). but cleaning it didnt come off at all. after 15 min i got SOME off. about 70%. the rest wont come off. after 30 min total i got it off. that is a -100 for me...... what did i do wrong or is it like that every time? if it is i wont even use it...ill find somthing else lol. besides that even my mom was impressed by it. here is what i did to cook:

pre heat on the stove for a min
add a TINY bit of oil(JUST enough to cover the bottom)
let that get VERY hot(just starting to steam)
add food and cook like normal. then i left it there while we ate(heat off)
cleaned about 2 hours later.

i read that the pre heating and oil will make it not stick, which worked. did that cause the terrible cleaning? did i heat it to much and oil burned on? what is up??

Yes, put water in the pan while it is still hot. Then eat your food. By the time you are finished eating you can scrub it easily. I PROMISE
Also you can get a bottle of creamy liquid stainless steel cleaner. Sometimes after frying hamburger patties it will leave a filmy look after cleaning. A few drops of that cleaner and a few wipes and that is sparkling again.

Don't use almunium because the metals get into your food. Dr Oz recommends Greenpan. I use All Clad SS.

Are you referring to Cameo?? I use it and love it. For those wondering, it's a white powder that you sprinkle on the area and then use a water-soaked sponge to turn it into a light paste and that helps take things off and makes the steel all shiny. They make one for Copper too.
