Exclamation How can I tell if my dog ate my conure ?

My nanday is missing when i got home to my apartment building. I left for only a few minutes to pick up something. While i waiting for the elevator, i could hear my nanday calling for me. we were only gone 20 minutes

my bird always stays at his cage. i noticed a perch was broken in his cage and that possible spooked him to fly out. my husband and i tore the place apart but there is no trace of him.

i have a very small dog, a shiba inu. my dog never attacks any of the birds. she plays with my green cheek all the time. if she did eat him, would there be feathers or blood? my nanday is pretty big and has a strong beak. my dog looks clean with no indication of a fight.

did she eat my bird? my husband thinks someone might have stolen the nanday, but that is crazy. i am devastated and have been crying for hours. my home is silent when i should hear squawking.

Re: How can I tell if my dog ate my conure ?

If your dog ate your bird you would now it... I think he is hiding somewhere and not making any noise cause something spooked him bad! I would look again but this time look everywhere and I mean everywhere in all nook and crannies! Im not saying your dog didnt eat him but you never know... If you dont find him within in 24 hours chances are the dog did eat him or someone did steal him... Good luck I hope you find him and give update so we know he is ok if you find him!

Re: How can I tell if my dog ate my conure ?

We're the doors open to the cage when you got home? Did the apartment look different when you got home? Did you leave any windows open?

If the dog ate a bird you would see feathers, blood and other, evidence. Your dog would most likely have wounds on him.
I'm so sorry your nanday is missing, I'm sure he will turn up.

Re: How can I tell if my dog ate my conure ?

was their a window open? it is possible, look for feather in his stool or feathers anywhere in the apartment. It is also possible someone stole him. send out fliers, ask around the apartment, tell pet shops, landscapers, and the police. there is a system for lost birds but im not sure what its called, but here are some links to similar sites.

TAKE YOUR PETS FOR REGULAR CHECK-UPS!
my cat died at 3 years old due to invasive kideny cancer. he was highly anemic and his kidneys and blood work were off the charts, the vet said it was the worst he's ever seen. we had to put him down that day. up untill then, he showed no sings of illness that we could recognize, however he was a ticking time bomb and only the vet could see it. we thought he was just muscular, but it was just his bulging kideneys. animals hide illness! he only showed signs the day before he died, before this, he seemed completely normal, healthy, and his usual self. his name was maxie and he was my best friend, because we thought he was healthy we didnt take him for check-ups but had we cought it earlier he might have had a chance. we learned from this, we should have paid attention, take ALL your pets for check-ups so they can be helped early on before its too late.

If its dark in your apartment he will go to sleep...try turning all your lights on so he thinks its day time while you're searching. He may be more apt to make noise if he thinks its daylight.

Re: How can I tell if my dog ate my conure ?

hey, there! my nanday is one loud s.o.b. and when he knows i am home he sounds off. i left him with the cage open. he never ever flies off unless something spooked him. my windows and patio door was closed. my front door locked. my husband said anyone could open the patio door, though.

there are no feathers on the floor and no blood. my dog has white patches on her paws, mouth, face, and underside. it is the same coloring like a fox. she is absolutley clean. i even rolled her over and gave her a once over but she doesnt have feathers in her mouth or look like she got into something. i want to blame the dog for the missing bird but i dont think the dog did it.

my home shows no sign of a bird disturbance except for a broken perch. we even pulled out the ac unit and moved all the furniture out. what could have happened to cause a bird to disappear?

Re: How can I tell if my dog ate my conure ?

You said you live in an apartment. If hes so loud, do you have neighbors who have complained? did anyone see you leave? Is he flighted? how is the perch broken? does it look like it was done by force? if you really want to rule out the dog you may be able to take him to the vet and have them induce vomiting....i dont knowif theyd do it in this instance but i know they can get dogs to bring up objects theyve swallowed

Re: How can I tell if my dog ate my conure ?

thanks all for replying! i turned all the lights on and we did a sweep of our home (it's a small home). i have been calling his name and trying not to scare him. we have our lights on and are going over every little hiding spot and area. it seems that he is not here. we are waiting a day before we notify the people that live in our building. i dont know, it sounds nuts alerting your neighbors of a stolen bird. i feel a little stupid and to blame for not putting him away.

my nanday would climb up to something if he couldnt fly. i just dont know how he could disappear.
