is it just so much cheaper because they're rebagging the food themselves to however much you need or like i said, WHAT'S THE DANG CATCH? heheh.

If your buying those types of premium pellets i wouldn't store them for prolonged periods of time. They don't have the preservatives and the Vit/nutrients "evaporate" degrade over time. Even if stored in the freezer and vacuum packed. That's why they have an expiration date . If your storing them for a year ,your negating the benefits of buying quality pellets. IMO

Taylor, there really is no catch. The store purchases large amounts in bulk so they can sell bags of it for cheaper. The main thing is if you are purchasing large amounts of re-packaged bird food then you want to be able to use it in a timely manner. For instance, you don't want to order 10lbs of pellets for one Cockatiel as it will likely not be good when you get 1/4 way through it. Although, if you have several birds to share in the spoils then go for it. Repackaged products will not last nearly as long as when sealed by the manufacturer.

Yesterday I placed an order for 3lbs of bird food for my two GCC's.

I was shopping prices online today after seeing this thread. I really can't beat the price of what I buy locally after shipping is added anyway. I buy an 8lb. bag at least once a week right now (in addition to fresh fruit & veggies)

If i was using 8 lbs a wk (I use 30+) , then i'd check on the price of the 20 -25lb bag. I'm sure your local dealer would get it for you. Do you have one of those kitchen vacuum sucker things ? A couple of those large canisters would work great for you, just keep it cool and dark.

Most suppliers will only sell minimum 200 lb lots.If you could use that , the price is way better. Storing that amount doesn't work well with me. I mix and change pellets up all the time and have tried all sorts of things. Buy as big a bag as you can use quickly and stick with the same supplier.( they don't love you as much when you come back on your hands and knees)

Mine get a TON of fresh food which is why I'm not using the "feed" as much as some might. Nah no vacuum thingy (other than the birds and the shop vac ) I do have one more source to check tho, just remembered it. Well the store I get the feed from is REALLY close (2 miles?) so I don't worry about it going bad buying the smaller bags.

see i'm trying to get a better quality food than he's had before when we first got him and so i was planning on just ordering the same amount as their 2.5 lb bags but doing bulk since it's almost 50% less expensive.

I buy bulk, I have to. With the way my TOOs waste food :54:
The Macaws aren't as wasteful thank goodness ( yet )
I bought large bags of food when I purchased Stella , and I just ran out.
Knowing MSBS ,I will have my food sitting on my doorstep tomorrow , lol. :)
They are the fastest with delivery , it's like you place the order online , get up from the chair , go open the door , and it's sitting there !! No kidding !!
I store it in big plastic containers in a cool place , never had a problem with freshness and use it so fast anyways .
I think it pays if you can store it. Add up what you would use in a months time and compare the prices....
I rather order from MSBS any day , its now my place of all places for bird related things. :)

You can freeze bird food but you're taking a chance because vitamins will degrade. If you're going to freeze it should be in a chest freezer which are colder. Freezing will also dehydrate seeds.

More importantly if you're buying re-bagged bird food you don't know

1)When it expires
2)If it's been exposed to birds
3)If it's kept in bins and the bins are not washed out and sanitized before each refill you don't know what has been collected in the bottom of the bins
4)You have no guarantee that fillers have not been added
5)You have no guarantee you are getting what you paid for.

Ask yourself if saving a few dollars but potentially jeopardizing the health of an animal with one of the most complicated metabolisms on earth is worth it. Which is why we only sell bird and parrot filled in factory sealed bags. This insures the bird food comes from a sanitary environment, contains the ingredients listed and the bags and will have full efficacy through the expiration dated imprinted on the sealed bag

If you feel your birds are wasting food - please reach out to us - [email protected] for cage management solutions that will save you money

It depends largely on who your supplier is.
if you order it from a well known , reliable store , chances are your food is fine. if you order from some other , cheap .com store , well ,you get what you get...JMHO

I know I'm gonna get in trouble but............:54:

windycity...........member since 2009 and only that many posts?!?!??!?

If you're selling that many lbs. a month at those prices, why aren't you retired already?? Better yet, why aren't you a site sponsor???

I didn't even check shipping costs because I know I can't afford those prices to begin with. I'm not trying to be mean or insulting at all, I am just stunned at how expensive most of your food products are.

Yes I'm a tightwad & I really scour to get the lowest prices for the best products (in this economy you have to) which is why I feed mostly fresh organic foods to my birds that I prepare myself from the local grocery store.

(Fire ants have me in a bad mood, can you tell???)

/end rant

When i want to buy food for my parrot i always prefer from authentic store. I always use only one store to bought food. I always take my parrot with me so, shopkeeper give food what parrot is wanted. Also sometime when i have no time to buy food i only call my shopkeeper and list out what i need for m parrot he comes to my place and give to me fresh food.not in a bulk..
