It means if the bird manages to escape the band letters and numbers can be typed into the data base and they can find the breeder who bread the bird and return it

what database? Does it also mean that the bird is a female born in march of 2011?

Bands are just for breeder references, so they know which chick is which. They basically have numbers instead of names. They'll jot down the band details and know that that came from a certain clutch, needs feeding x times a day and that that one was sold to XYZ.

I have Merlin's band number on his cert of hatching, if he was to get lost then I could possibly identify him with his band number (unless they have taken it off etc)

They're actually quite useless for anyone but the breeder, except for the example above.

I would think that's probably true. Merlin's band is a random bunch of letters and numbers which have no significant meaning to anyone but the breeder. :)

Closed band could mean anything, MAR sounds like the breeder and they can put whatever they want on the band.

I am a breeder and I try to put the info so people can use it. My bands have AAV for Amy's Aviary. Then they have PA for the state they r breed in. Then the year of hatch, then band #for my records. To me that band is MAR is the breeder code, hatched in 2011 possable FL baby for the F it would not be for female because u have to band babies at just a few days old and have no idea of sex at that time. Then 53 is band # for the breeders info. Bands r usefull when they have the year on them so u know the age of a bird. U can also try to trake down the breeder if u have their code and state. I have had people call me about a band hopeing I was the breeder and could give them more info but not always my babies. Hope this helps

Sunny's band has 08( her hatch year) TX (hatched in Texas) #49, and the letters JBA. I assume that is the aviary that hatched her. I would love to know who they are but am not aware that there is any data base. Wish there was.

Where I live I think bands are only used to identify which bird is which esp for when it comes to DNA sexing.

I know Flynn has one and his is blue with one number on it. When I got his DNA cert. It listed him as the number on his band.

We give hatch/ DNA certificates with a closed (ring) banded babies. But you would have to go to the manufacture of the leg bands to find me and then the manufacture will only tell you that they had made the band. The manufacture might take your contact info and pass it on to the breeder but it's up to the breeder to contact you. Some breeders have listed their bands with a registry but are my no means required to do so. Here in the US there's no place you can go to get info on a certain band. If you found a banded bird and tried to find the owner though that band number, maybe 1/100 chance. If you were lucky your breeder used a band from an organization like the AFA. If you contact the AFA they could help you contact the person that band was issed to. But a AFA band clearly has AFA on it. Mirco chipped, that's a different story.

thank you all for the info. I was just cuios because she is my only banded bird of my three parrots and when I bought her the woman I bought her from stated that she was 5 mo old and that she bought her from a breeder in miami as a three week old chick and had hand fed her and that she was now 5 mo old.she is a wonderful bird but I was wondering if she was older than I thought and I should be watching for egg laying problems. She is a doll and my dream bird I dream small. Thank goodness. However she is everything I coulld want and cuddly to boot. Thanks for all your help.:D
