What do you have experience with?

I'm a conure addict .... there are more species of conure than you could shake a stick at, and they would all fall into the small to medium category.

I also have yet to meet a quaker I didn't like. I think they'd probably fall into the medium category.

Pionus parrots are mid sized, attractive and have dynamic personalities. They are very similar to amazons. Maximillion pionus are great birds and not overly expensive. Blue-headed pionus are gorgeous and have pretty stable personalities, a little more expensive. And dusky and bronzewing pionus are startlingly beautiful birds if you can find them. Duskies also seem to have good personalities in general.

Just to make you a little jealous I had three .... count them, 3 ... 1 ... 2 ... 3 Queen of Bavaria (actually they were all male, so in this case they were KING of Bavaria) conures in my hands the other day ... they were so young that they didn't know "step-up" yet ... they were like 8-9 weeks old (since they were so young, does that make them PRINCE of Bavaria conures?)... and quite cute. One of these days I will have one of those golden beauties!

ok it worked, I am jealous. Those are beautiful. I fear though I could never get one. I cant imagine what it would do to Auggie's self esteem; talk about ugly duckling syndrome, a dusky and a queen....

well my aunt use to be a big time bird breeder she speacilized in just about every bird i can think of except canaries and nobel parrots, Parrotlets. I use to have a quaker that my brother bought from her and promptly gave to me that was my main experience with a parrot but i've had lovebirds, budgies, cockatoos

and i've helped her with several of her larger parrots but i prefer the small/med varities.
i found a lady that breeds Parrotlets are they good companions? *my aunt never had these*

There are a lot of birds that fit that sm-med. What is your life like do you have kids or will you be in the future? who will be the primary caretaker? how many hours is someone home? Do you own or rent?
All theese things play a roll in finding the right breed. Some are loud not suitable for an apartment, some are one person birds, some are active and need a lot more excersize.
The Senegal or Meyers are great birds, can be one person.
Conure are a great bird some are loud and may not work in an apartment.
Pionus is another great one.

well im going to be a college student and yes, my college allows pets *birds or fish* ive checked.

I want a bird that wont mind being left alone for two hours because i'm going for a zoology major and ive managed to rank high enough to get out of most language based classes.

I always make room for pets so he/she would get cared for very well.

I dont mind a bit of noise now and then but i do mind constant.

any ideas?

I was thinking quaker, parrolett or budgie but the last is really just not what im interested in...
and as ive never met a finch you can handle and the last cockatiel my brother had was EXTREMELY unfriendly those are not even on a list.

A Quaker is a great bird, Dont forget to check state regulations on them they are illegal in some states.

How about a caique? I met one at the pet store where we got our Grey. It was a funny little bird. Very clown-like. It seemed pretty quiet. It was a little bigger than a budgie but way more personality.

I found a birdmart that will be in my area so i'm certainly going to look at the different birds and probably base my decision off of what ive learned and seen.

as for caique's they are VERY expensive or at least the ones ive seen are, this one fellow i found wanted 1350.00 and another 700.00 for an unweaned baby, the cheapest i found was 550.00.But they do sound like a nice bird if a bit tempramental or so ive heard.

I already bought a cage and everything and the highest amount i want to pay on the bird would be 150.00

any of the grass parakeets would fit then, they are really quiet , very small and lovers not fighters that are within your price range. my red rump is the only species I have experience with though.
but she is amazing.
