Lily-Sun/Green Cheek conure Hybrid March 30 hatchdate<3
I am looking for a species of small bird that would be a great little companion for me while I am in college for the next 4-6 years. I need a bird who isn't super screamy. Occasionally screaming every now and then like their little "moments" is understandable, but loud noise like a sun conure/macaw/cockatoo isn't what I'm looking for. I know there is no such thing as a quiet bird, I just would like one that can be quiet at times if it's not bored(I plan on getting tons of toys, feeding a good diet of pellets and fresh fruits and veggies w/ plenty of attention and time outside for the sunlight). I would also prefer if the max noise wasn't as high pitched as a sun conure. I'm open to any small species EXCEPT I don't have an interest in the african species, budgies, parrotlets, tiels, or green cheeks. I do like green cheeks for their cute little colors and noises, but not to own one. I have also considered an African Grey, but I would like to find a smaller species. I looked at Caiques and love their personalities, but I heard they have a loud high pitched scream. I live with my mom right now, it's mostly her that doesn't want the loud. I could care less to have a sun screaming in my ear lol

I have plenty of experience to handle any species of bird. If I had free time and money for it, I would definitely consider a GW, BnG, or Blue throat macaw or maybe even a Galah or U2(also if noise wasn't a problem).

So I basically need a bird who is small, playful, affectionate, and that won't disturb other people with their noise level or screaming who don't want to hear constant screaming or the high-pitched noises.

I would appreciate any advice/suggestions from personal experience-I have heard loud noises from blue crowns, suns, quaker parrots, amzons, greys, etc.. a lot of species but I'm asking this because those birds were socializing with many other birds or they're breeders, I don't know what a single pet would be like.

Also forgot to mention, I'd like a bird that isn't super expensive. $700-$800 for a small bird is crazy for me(another reason I crossed out Caique lol). I guess it depends on the bird, I don't mind paying $300 for a sun or blue quaker, for example.

Every bird is different :) I had a blue Quaker who was quiet, affectionate and very clever.. so I recommend them because he was amazing haha.. but then I hear that alot of Quakers scream alot.. what about a senegal?
good luck!

I was considering a quaker, but I'm not sure due to their noise. I've heard how loud they can get(spent a week babysitting 50 birds, including 2 pet quakers and a pair of breeders, the breeders were definitely screamers!). But I think with enough toys and attention it would be a decently quiet bird. I want to explore more options, first before I decide.

How about a BH Pionus?

I looked at Pionus but unfortunately I don't know of many breeders near me(would rather not ship) and also, it's not a "small" bird. I think a smaller bird would be best since I'm going to college.

I don't know as much about Pionus, which is why I didn't look right into it(considered it, though). Unfortunately there are not breeders nearby, and I'd rather not ship a bird.

Is the quaker's scream high pitched like a sun's? Or is it just loud, but not crazy enough to make your ears bleed? lol I have heard them before, but there were many other birds screaming all at once, suns, amazons, etc..(a bunch of breeder birds in one area, basically). So it was hard to judge how loud they actually were haha

I would suggest a senegal. They are known to be good apartment birds because they are pretty quiet. Mine never screamed. She did make lots of cute noises though! They make great little companions. They are in the $200 to $500 price range. If you have any questions about senegals, just let us know. I (as well as other senegal owners) will be happy to respond!

I know about Senegals and Meyer's, but have no interest in them. I find that I have a bigger interest in the species that originate from the amazon than Australia and Africa(except greys and Toos c: ). I know they can be quiet but I've heard and read from different places(other forums & owners) that they can scream and scream if they wanted to. I am looking more towards species from the amazon, like conures, quakers, etc..

Just curious, why don't you have any interest in African or Australian species? The ones from South America all seem to be loud lol! It sounds like you are leaning more towards the conure species. The quietest one (that I know of) tend to be the green cheeks but you said you didn't want one.

I personally think u have ruled out any bird that fits what u say u want. Any and all birds can and will be loud!!!! Even Green Cheeks and Senegals can be. My Senegal has this high pitched sound he makes that I hate!!!! Give me a Sun Conure over him any day!!! You could walk into my house right now and never know I have a B&G Macaw, Grey, Senegal, Jenday for pets. Even my little cockatiel u will hear before the others. I just took in a Hahns macaw that we r working on the noise with her but she is learning. You can teach any bird that screaming is not the way to get things. I also have breeders in my house, many pairs really, 4 pairs of Sun Conures and you would never know it!!! The Indian Ringnecks u can hear from a mile a way and I hate their call!!!

A bird is what u put into it and I really think maybe now with School and living with ur Mom is not the best time for u to get a bird. Wait till u r out on ur own and can get what u want.
