Does anyone know where I can buy leg bands for my African Greys online? I found a site or two that sell them in bulk, but I'm hoping to find something more reasonable.

My husband and I want to have them banded in case of an emergency, but the vets around here say that I have to find the band and applicator myself.

Ideally I would like to find coloured ones, but I'm open to any reasonable deals. I've searched for days and haven't been able to find anything.

Any input would be much appreciated.

L&M leg Bands in California, or join the AFA of course any bird over 100 grams can be micro chipped. You could also get a vet to "Tatoo" them, a identifying mark say, inside left thigh. (something the owner would know). If your looking to get a lost bird back, micro chip. There's no national registry for bird bands and so are only for your information. i doubt someone could find you though the band . You could have your phone number as a band number. You would also need a different crimper for each size of band(bird) that you want. They don't come "one size fit all". A CAG might need a 15mm and a sennie a 10mm. I think they also are making a plastic "wire tie" type band now but don't know much about them. I need to get some of them for the chickens!!

Even if it is in bulk, has anyone heard of coloured metal open bands?

I'm actually against leg bands....after one of my bird hurt her foot and the band prevent blood flow to the feet cause of swelling and I ended up having to amputate her leg....there's others that had simular issue as mine and have leg band removed....

We get all of our bands through L&M, they do sell open bands but we don't put open bands on any of our birds, in all honesty, if we buy birds that have open bands we immediately cut them off, they can get caught on things too easily and I just don't think they are safe. Also, like henpecked said, a band really isn't the best method for recovering a lost or stolen bird. I'm not saying it wont help but if someone were to find one of your birds and want to keep them they could always just cut the band off. I would look into getting them microchipped.
