How to feed pomagranit

I have noticed that a few people give their birds pomagranite and my question is how do you feed it. Do you peel it and just give the seeds or do you wash the fruit then cut into wedges and give it to them? Do they eat the pulp as well as the seeds?

Oh, you'll have fun with the (in)famous pomegranate.

This is how I feed it:

Option #1) Peel, cut into wedges, throw into bowls, ...run

Option #2) Wash THOROUGHLY, cut into half, place on kitchen counter, place bird(s) on same counter...run

The "running" part is because MY fids make such an enormous mess with it, no matter how I serve it. They literally FLING some of the pomegranate, and believe you me,...it IS messy. :30:

I'm sorry, but Pomegranate STAINS are a royal pain in the rear end to remove. :31:...hence the "run" part. :30:

you can de-seed it by cutting it into forth's and breaking apart in water and rubbing the seeds out. then put it in the dish, you might want to use an umbrella

I get very little mess when my Ekkie eats Pomegranate even though they are suppose to be messy eaters. I try not to cut into the seeds as the juice gets all over. I will score the outside skin and try to break it into sections without bruising the fruit. He loves to grind up the seeds.

I do both the wedges or just take out the seeds it depends on whether I am mixing with other fruit or not. But my cage is a corner cage and both walls are now stained with what looks like blood splatter. LOL...

I remove the arils and toss a few into their bowls. My GCC loves them, and they freeze really well, so you can do a few and lay them out to freeze, and then toss them in a plastic bag.

We just cut them into wedges to feed. Part of the reason why I have my walls painted semi-gloss and use a shower curtain in front of the walls even though it is painted for easy cleaning....The flooring we use pergo flooring so everything is a easy wipe up...

I've heard a great way to deseed pomegranates is by cutting it in half, then placing it on an upside down bowl (cut side up) and pressing the sides down to turn it inside out. Haven't tried it myself since I only recently heard about this method... need to go buy me a pomegranate!

Better buy one quick, I bought two at the grocery store near by as most stores ran out of them. My birds LOVE them!!!! They only get it when they're in season....

Thank you all for your responses. It sounds like they will enjoy them ,however maybe I should only feed them in the shower

. It is also good to know you can freeze the arials. I really got a kick out of feed and run and hubby will be happy he needs to repaint walls every couple of years

.I am going to try some because I love feeding them different foods and seeing what they do and don't like

I cut them in half and break it into pieces. Be prepared to repaint any nearby walls that are painted white,LOL

Since I also like pomegranate seeds, I put on some old pajamas (this is important) and I put Mango on my shoulder. We share, and I hand him the seeds one by one, thus reducing (but by no means eliminating) the mess. I like to just take a knife, break a small part of the skin, and then peel away with my fingers. This takes a long time, but we are patient, and it beats eating junk food at bed. Mango loves this, he wipes his beak all over me, and I think it helps our bonding. He is a bit of a piggy though, if he doesnt have a seed and Im trying to put one in my mouth he will try to steal it. He opens his mouth and follows my hand all the way to my mouth (adorable). Make sure you dont mind destroying whatever clothes you are wearing though. I find the slower I give the seeds the less of a mess he makes. He eats them fast if he has a bunch and just flings the juice and debris everywhere.
