Merlin the brown-headed parrot
We have a brown head parrot. Merlin is now 2 1/2 years old and has been with us since he was weaned. During the first six months, he was an angel with both my husband and myself. Since then, he has decided that my husband is his friend and I am part of the decor. He wants absolutely nothing to do with me. We have thus decided to start researching for a second bird, one that hopefully will bond with me.

So far, I am torn between a white-bellied caique and a blue throat conure. Any suggestion or comments? I want to make sure that the new bird is acceptable for Merlin. They will obviously have their own cage, etc. but they will be part of the same flock. I am also looking for bird that will love spending time playing and cuddling with me but that can spend the better part of the day playing in its cage.

I have read that Senegal are one bird per family. Is it the same for Brown Heads??

Thank for your advice.

I don't know much about brown head parrot, sorry. But if you are trying to find a cuddly parrot, why not try cockatoos? Conures and cockatiels are pretty good. If you want a more independent parrot, a Indian ringneck or alexandrine are good choices too.

Between the two you listed, I would go with the caique personally. Since my friend have one and he is very sweet and loving. :)

There is no guarantee that Merlin will accept another bird, although between the two choices given, and with the idea that you plan on having them interact sometime in the future, I would recommend a conure over a caique. Caiques really do best with their own species because they can be very hyper active and on the go - something that most other species will not understand or appreciate. I watched a video of a caique and senegal supposedly "playing" together, and I could tell that the senegal was not impressed with the caiques behavior. It's something that only another caique would really understand.

If you don't care if the two birds ever interact, then both birds could fit the little niche you are looking for. Both are active and cuddly birds, although I think caiques may have a higher tendency towards independent play than conures do - in general. Caiques are very mouthy and active birds that supposedly turn into demon birds later in life. Conures are nippy/bitey, and are known for screaming (the Aratingas/large conures more so than the Pyrrhuras).

There's not really much information out there though on BTC's so I don't know what these guys are like in general, but I am jealous of the fact that you can get them and I can't!
