i clipped my cockatiels toe nail too short today. it bleed off and on for almost 3 hours from 5pm to 8. its stopped for almost the last hour now. it stopped earlier, around 6:30 and started again at 7:30. i went out and got some quick blood stopper antiseptic styptic gel. when i got back with the gel it stopped for the last hour. i have not put the gel on yet. im wondering even though its not bleeding now, should i put it on anyway in case it starts again while he and i'm in bed?

thanks.

btw, i tried corn starch and flour when the bleeding started. it didn't seem to help much. i've trimmed his nails too short in the past and this has happened but the bleeding would stop in 20 minutes or so.

No i wouldn't put it on unless it starts again. I'm not a big fan of the medicated powder/gel and prefer the corn starch. Have you tried the pedi-safe perches? Pretty much do away with having to trim nails.

ok thanks. i havn't tried the pedi safe. theres a perch in his cage that has sand paper type stuff wrapped on it. but he rarely goes in his cage except to sleep at night, he's usually on top of the cage or on a book shelf next to the cage. or on someones shoulder.

The sandpaper perch covers tend to hurt birds feet, safety pumice perches are much better. they are smooth on top/bottom and rough on the sides.

Have you tired to put some water on it? When I had my cockatiels, one of them's nail actually fell off! And it kept bleeding for 20 min! Before I went to the vet, I put some water on it and it did helped. Maybe you can try that!

But I normal just put corn starch. And it often worked

I usually get a bowl of corn starch or flour and I dip the bleeding toe in there. After doing so make sure he doesn't get on any sort of surface where he can irritate it some more to make it open up to bleed again. Let him play on a play stand where you can observe.
