Was wondering if anyone knew if these products were safe, we're avoiding a full house bombing experience!

We've used little cupboard hanging things to stop moths and silverfish without any issues for 2 years so that's ok, birds don't go into our room and we don't touch them.

We use ant rid on the kitchen floor in the corners. No problem.

But now we have a cockroach problem, this house has been unoccupied for 3 years, the landlord wanted us to use these flakes, but they smelt strongly and even on the box said not to use them if you're living near them so yeah.... -.-

So we got these cockroach bait things by Mortein (for anyone in Aus reading this) yay or nay?

We are also having a cockroach problem in our home, we have had a professional come in twice and he says our house is clean, and the roaches are coming in through the vents. They feed on the bird's food and tell all their buddies about it. We live in Hawaii where you can go outside in a field at night with a flashlight and see roaches crawling everywhere, so it will always be a struggle.

What we have learned... roaches are scared of people and light, so they feed in the dark while you are asleep in bed. They also hate pine sol so some of this strategically wiped on a surface will deter them for a few days. Also they drink any standing water in your house, even in the bottom of the dishwasher.

What we have done... we sweep up around the cage every night, and remove his food and water dishes until morning. We also change the paper in the bottom of the cage right before bedtime instead of some time during the day. This has improved but we still find roaches from time to time. My wife sometimes creeps around the house at night with my night vision goggles on search and destroy missions lol and they are still sometimes under or even in his cage.

I recently found a product online called "Control Aviary Bug Spray" that is advertised safe for birds and the opposite for roaches I plan on seeing if my local pet store carries it, but if anyone has tried it feedback would be much appreciated.

Its a general purpose cleaner/disinfectant with pine oil in it. We don't use it around the bird, we mostly wipe door thresholds, around vents on the wall, and the edges inside our cupboards(keep them roaches off the clean dishes!) with it every few days. It stops vaporizing shortly after application but the residue stays for a while.

If you can find food grade diatomaceous earth (not the pool/spa stuff), it works on most bugs, is all natural, a fine powder, so as long as the birds dont breathe it, it's safe.

I've read roaches do not like the smell of lemons either, so if you cannot fine pine-sol you could try that. There are many claims of household things that work that you can find online, the pine-sol just happens to be what the pest control guy recommended for us.

There is also a cleaner made by Clorox called "Green Works" that is 97% natural and we have found very effective to kill roaches on the spot. However, even where I live only a couple of stores carry it.

I use the diatomaceous earth also with good results. Works well with roaches and ants. I just pour a small mound around house and floor. Nontoxic to birds and pets.

stuff works great, I love it!!

We (thankfully) haven't found too many roaches, but we must live right on top of an anthill because they invade out apartment every summer by the trillions. We use a citrus-based bug spray called Orange Guard. It is non toxic to humans and pets, but kills bugs on contact by destroying their exoskeletons. It also repels them from crossing surfaces sprayed with it because of the scent (which is an orange scent because it's made of concentrated oranges). It's a bit expensive ($11 a bottle), but it works really well and I don't have to worry about Kiwi getting harmed by it nor exposing myself to caustic chemicals.

Kiwi, I've used that as well with very good results, the "Control" spray works just as well and works great on ants.

WHY did I have to open this thread and read it? Now I'm all itchy and paranoid. As much as I hate winter, right at this very moment I'm glad it's colder than a Penguin's hiney outside, as all the bugs are laying dormant...somewhere...hopefully far FAR away from the house.
