Sandy Perch

Sponsored Links
We've been reading on the advantages and disadvantages of concrete and abrasive perches to help in the nail maintenance of Mac Macaw.

Concrete doesn't sound so great and I know there are unsafe chemicals in concrete.

I found one called Sandy Perch which says it is 100% natural and bird safe but I am unable to locate any information as to what the adhesive is that is used to keep the "sand" attached to the wood.

Is anyone familiar with this product?

Re: Sandy Perch

No idea what the adhesive is. I have some of these in my Ekkie cages and they've held up well and I like them. The sand has only just started coming off the edge of one and I suspect my little green guy is prompting that along. They are lightwieght compared to the concrete which I no longer use. They wash up well and I've had them for a few years now. Of course macaws are much stronger chewers than Eclectus so I would be wondering about the adhesive as well. I will follow your thread with interest as I never gave it much thought before.

Re: Sandy Perch

I've never used them, but on their website they state:

Our Sandy Perch products are 100% non-toxic! The natural tree limb shapes are great for your birds' feet - something concrete can not be! (What's in concrete, anyway? ... does that have an FDA approval?) . . . Comfortable because it's not concrete, Sandy PerchTM is a manzanita core with brightly colored sand permanently bonded to it. . . Sandy Perch coatings are non-toxic and carry the approval of the FDA for HUMANS!

If you go to their website, they have contact info: Sandy Perch® :: The finest conditioning perch for your birds! Made with 100% FDA approved ingredients

Re: Sandy Perch

Rosie used to have a concrete perch but they made her nails even sharper. I've never tried sand and never wanted to. I don't like perches that are rough all over.

You should check out the safety pumice perch. It is smooth on top and rouch on the side protecting the pads on your birds feet. There is a synhetic model and a bamboo model. since using it within 3 days Rosie's nails have never scratched me and stay trimmed and the perfect length. Only one nail needs slight maintence because her bones are out of place so it doesn't rest normal. All it needs is a quick filing every few months.
