Does anyone know if those rice-filled bags you put in the microwave are safe for birds?? Either for first aid or extra warmth at night, like if the furnace broke down?

Hmm... unfortunately I'm not sure if they are or not so I can't help you there. They may add something to the rice? Probably not but I trust no one and nothing :p

But! I will say that you can very easily make them yourself, in which case they'd be safe. So long as you have a sewing machine, some fabric, and of course rice. You could even use an old pillow case. At least, I cannot see any problem with this; unless someone else disagrees? The only issue I could see would be the bird getting at the nasty old rice... but if you wrapped the bag in a towel and kept an eye on them I think it'd be fine?

Oh I would definitely make them myself, I wouldn't trust the store bought ones.

A hot water bottle wrapped in a towel might work, the only problem would be the bird biting through it.
