Squeaky- green cheek
Hi, I'm new here, and a new owner of a 12wk old green cheek.. I've noticed its still rather clumsy and awkward, (like a toddler), but I figured its because its still young. My question, however, is how do I encourage squeaky to use its foot to hold food, toys, etc? He sleeps on one foot so I know he could do it. But I rarely see him use his one foot to grab objects like he is supposed to. And the occasions he does, its very clumsy, and he loses his balance, or interest. I've tried giving him objects to hold with his foot, and praise him for doing it, but he doesn't seem interested in using it as much as I thought parrots should. Any ideas? Thanks.

He's young, and like a toddler, is learning to use his feet, wings, etc. Try doing what we call "laddering", to strengthen his feet & legs. With him on one hand, put the other hand against his chest, and have him step up. Then, do it again with the other hand. Do it over & over, as though he was climbing a ladder. Praising him constantly. Also, try handing him large treats like Nutriberries, which he'll have to hold to eat. It will happen, but, may take a bit of time. Like children walking, they do things when they're ready. Not before.

I've been working with him and he is learning quickly! I'm amazed at how fast he's catching on. He's already trying to sound out words, and he hasn't pooped on me since the first 2 days I had him, he already knows step up, step down, let go, kisses, play dead. He's very smart, I was just curious if this is normal for a young bird, I figured it was, but wanted to know from folks who have more experience! Thanks!
