My brother is bringing me a cage and perch that they had for a cockatoo. Can I disinfect this by spraying heavily with vinegar or is there something else I should use?

Unless the previous bird was sick with a contagious disease, hot water & a good dishwashing detergent & scrub brush is really all you need...thoroughly rinse it & let it dry in the sun.....

In the past couple of years, the medical community has been raising concerns about the media & manufacturers promoting the proliferation of sanitinatization and the increase of immune problems & infections & diseases that are evolving as resistant to many of our combative agents...read up on over sanitation, you might be surprised.....

Thanks.

Yes, I am familiar with the over sanitation conundrum - due to having 4 kids. There is a lot to be said for plain ole soap and warm water. =)

AAAHHHH!!!

They just dropped off the cage. I was planning on using it as an outdoor cage for Mattie to get into some sunshine. It is a decent size - not big enough for her all the time but for outside I think it should be fine.

I am so disappointed because it is rusted! Is there anything I can do to have it fixed?

I googled a little bit - someone said an autobody repair may be able to sand and repaint it. Has anyone every had this done?

It can be sanded and re powder coated, a lot of places do that. Just make sure they know it is for a bird and use bird safe paint.

The problem with having it powder coated is is it's not a cheap proposition...$200-$300 is average.....what you need to do is find out what the cage new would cost & go from there.....if the cage is powder coated, you might be able to take the cage apart & spot sand the rust spots yourself.....I did that one time & decided it was too much work, so would keep looking for deals used or new & would have the cage before I ever brought in a bird without a cage.....

I've used Krylon paint to repaint & touch up spots, but when you sand to bare metal, use their primer, not a different one.....then let the cage dry several days before putting the bird in it.....

Wire wheel at the end of a drill will remove the rust and flakey paint.. Then just wipe it down with some cooking oil to keep it from flashing... If you want to restore it .. I would sand blast it..and paint it..

If you want it sandblasted find a company that makes memorial( head stones) ..they will usually sandblast small stuff for cheap..

Good luck
