I'm new here and also new to the parrot world. Today I'm getting a 10 year old Blue Headed Pionus. The lady I'm getting her from said he is very tame has been around other big birds and 2 small dogs. I've done a lot of research on this bird and seems to be a good choice for a first time parrot owner. Wondering what anyones thoughts are on this bird and adopting a bird at this age. She said he is very tame and the lady that raised it and hand fed it suggested it to me. Is he to old to try and teach new things too? Any info on this bird and how to deal with bringing it into a new home would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

Hello there Blucat60, and welcome to the forum. :)

You must be SO excited about bringing home your new family member today. Blue Headed Pionus are GORGEOUS birds!!! And 10 isn't old for a parrot that can potentially live 25-40 years. :)

Once you get him home, I'd personally let him settle in for a good while until he is familiar with his new surroundings. Remember, everything will be new to him. New house, new sounds, new faces, new everything.

You can start earning his trust by sitting near his cage and talking to him softly. You can even sit by his cage and read him a book. The more you talk to him, the better. Then offer him some treats through the cage, and see how he reacts.

Do you know if your new companion has been to an avian vet lately? With all new birdy companions I'd always suggest making an appointment with an avian vet rather sooner than later and have a thorough health check done.

Thanks so much for your response. I'm excited but nervous. The only birds I've had before were cockatiels. So we will see. Hope the adjustment goes well for him. As I said I'm new to this site haven't really had a chance to check it out but looking forward to it. Have a good...
