How do I train my CAG not to perch on feet (Mandatory for medical reasons)

Hi there,
I was hoping I could get some advice on my current issue with my CAG. I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes in June of this year, the complications I have been experiencing with this disease is the pain in my legs and the circulation. My CAG loves to sit on our feet; he’d rather perch there then on anything else, this was never a problem until I got a scratch from him a couple months ago on my foot which has not yet healed. I am on antibiotics for it as it is infected, this is due to the Diabetes, my question is does anyone know how to train him that our feet are no longer an option for him to perch, simply telling him no and moving him off is NOT working. He is only 8 months old so I’m sure we can train him but how to is our problem. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Ah ... this may sounds simplistic, but just don't let him get on your feet.

Birds are great at learning patterns, so just show him the new pattern.

It can be harder to teach them to stay off a certain piece of furniture or some-such, but your foot? Don't put your feet out where he can climb on them.

hmmm is it the pressure on your feet? or like the scratched from his claws? If it's the scratches maybe you could get some slippers or comfy shoes or something for inside? I think it may be difficult to teach a CAG to not perch on feet.... Just dont entertain him, when he goe son take him off ASAP.

Thanks for your replies, AD it sounds simply enough but this little guys is the most stubborn thing I’ve ever met in my life. When he has his mind set on something forget it, he literally freaks out when I tuck my feet under my bum when I sit on the couch. I’ve been trying to get him to not want to perch on feet since the scratch happened.

Meghan, it’s not the pressure it’s the risk of another scratch. Feet are extremely sensitive for people with diabetes, as I mentioned this scratch happened a couple of months ago and has yet to heal and I’m now on anitbiotics for the infection that came with it. I absolutely hate wearing slippers or socks in the house but I guess I might have to start wearing them. This particular scratch came about when I was cooking dinner one day and he was in the kitchen perched on my foot and something spooked him so when he flew away he got me pretty good, it drew blood and hasn’t gone away yet.

my husband and I both have type 2 ourselves. It is imortant to wear shoes or slippers in the house because you can step on something sharp and not even know it.

my husband dropped something a year ago on his toe... It still hasn't healed.

Suggest you give him an alternate kind of perch he would like instead of feet. There are lots of new and crazy perches in the stores, even ones they can eat!!

I have hundreds of dollars worth of perching toys in my home as I mentioned he is obsessed with perching on feet, in fact he has been in his cage most of the weekend because I am not feeling well and am too weak to fight with him about it. It's not as easy as it sounds trust me!!!!
