pets and indoor air quality?

Im curious if im the only one that worries about the air quality inside for us humans with all the birds and dogs.
All the dander and dust could get out of control with too many.Even with vacuming every day.
I do have the old school type air cleaners with the filter but they are over ten years old.I have window AC units so cant install a big air cleaner.

I want to get some budgies for the outdoor aviary but they would have to come inside in worst months of winter. I am afraid the dust will be too much with the existing birds and dogs I have.
I have 3 tiels and 2 conures and 5 dogs( 1 large and 4 small).
I mean I suppose if we smoked the indoor air would be really bad so a few birds and dogs shouldnt concern me but it does nag at me.

I believe it has as much to do with your respratory system as it does the dander from the birds. My wife and I have no known allergies, so we can tolerate higher pollen counts, dust, etc. In spite of that we purchaced a vac specifically designed to filter out pet hair and dander. If your family is more tolerant or less tolerant you will have to adjust you cleaning schedule to those needs. Plus, the more pets, the higher the need vor vacuming.

We do have allergies.But thankfully not to the birds or dogs.
Winter is when my son gets them the worst and coughs almost all winter long dispite the humidifiers and air cleaners.
I didnt know they have pet specific vacumn cleanears.I will have to look into this.

I would probably invest in 2 or more hepa air filters in your case. I only have 1 conure (and 1 air filter that is only all day, except nights). It is crazy the amount of fine feather dust I have to vacuum and clean off of furniture!

I currently don't have any air cleaners, but I do have a tendency to leave one or more window open during nice weather!


It is a bit of an annoyance in winter when it's too cold to leave the windows open so the air inside tends to get 'stale'.

the first time I went to clean the filter my jaw literally dropped when I saw this:

the black is the clean side.

I'd like to get a smaller one for my bird room and then eventually the bedroom.
The air in the house is much much better, a huge improvement!

That's just "coarse dust". You should make sure your filter has multiple different filters, so you can replace or clean just the outermost coarse dust filter, and the expensive fine filters and deodorizers inside will last much longer. Your filter is black so that's probably an all-in-one w/charcoal.

I've seen some Hunter filters whose pre-filter looks like that. It is separate from the HEPA filter, but still more than you would need to replace frequently given the option.

We just installed a new high efficiency HVAC system and the filtered cold air return is less than 10 feet from the fidcage. We already have the habit of replacing the filter frequently. As for a vac, we bought the Dyson animal model. But, it's been great with the dog hair and regular dust. The fid shouldn't add that much more.

If you really have allergy problems you migh consider the Rainbow. The Rainbow pulls in the dusts with the air but also circulates through a water bath, trapping the dust in the water before blowing out the air. I once worked as a Rainbow salesman and have always bee super impressed with them. My mother bought one decades ago to help my brother fight athsma.

I've heard that low air quality affects the birds.So it will be better to check your home's air quality.I have checked the air quality of the home using a indoor air quality testing service.They suggested improvement of air quality and they themselves applied various techniques to improve the quality of air.So it'll be good if you make sure the air quality, so that your pets wont get affected.

I am still looking for a good airfilter, costeffective is a must.
Most HEPAfilters are not the washable kind and (imho) bloody expensive to replace every couple of weeks.
Not easy to find...

I've just opened my computer and it is like a winterwonderland in there!
(So I am wondering about my lungs ;D )

And yes my vacuumcleaner is a pet-special/ allergy friendly one with extra filters- really helps!

Recently, I began to feel allergic to our parrots. It really worries me, because I really love my pets and parting with them because of an allergy will be a big blow for me. Can you tell me which model of vacuum cleaner you bought? I am going to make a large order for Amazon. By the way, along with a vacuum cleaner I want to order an air purifier for pet owners, what do you think of it? Are there any reviews from pet owners?
