Bleach and parrot sick question

Sponsored Links
Hello all,
I am concerned for my green cheek conure. Last night i went to my moms house and I took my parrot with me (i always do this so i know it is not stressful for him). She had cleaned with bleach the night before but i could still smell it fairly strong i wasnt worried about it since it was used 24 hours before we went over. But..... then my parrot started vomiting, quite a bit. I got him out of the house asap because the smell was the only thing i could think of that was causing him to be sick.
He vomited on the car ride back but not once we got home. I took him in the bathroom and turned on the hot shower because i heard steam was good for respritory irritation.
I called the vet (there is only one within 6 hrs of where i live that will even touch a parrot) and he wont be in until next tues.
I did weigh my gcc and he is a good 68g his feathers look fine eyes and noes is clear. My question is can the smell of bleach cause a parrot to vomit? And now that he is out of that environment is he ok?
thanks for any help!

Re: Bleach and parrot sick question

Our fids have respiratory systems that are so much more delicate than ours. If the odor from the bleach was annoying to you, chances are it was irritating to your GCC.

If that was the only thing different about your mom's house, it vary well could have been the cause of it's distress.

I pulled up a quick search on bleach and birds and found this excerpt in the following link: Top Ten Bird Killers

"3. Toxic Fumes

... Many common disinfectants and household cleaning agents release fumes that can be toxic or fatal to birds. Chlorine bleach, phenols and ammonia can all have dangerous vapors that can cause irritation, toxicosis and even death.
Common household aerosol products, such as perfume, deodorant and hairspray, can cause respiratory problems in birds. They may cause severe inflammation and difficulty breathing, and after large or direct exposure, death can occur. Any pump spray or aerosol using a propellant can be dangerous to birds, and these should not be used around birds. ..."

There is much more there.

Hope your GCC is OK!

Re: Bleach and parrot sick question

Thanks for replying I was unaware that bleach was that dangerous because I know people use it even on there parrots cages and toys to disinfect. I have never heard of bleach causing vomting in parrots, but like you said that was the only thing that changed in my mom's house so I can only assume the bleach is what caused the vomiting. Thanks again for a reply.

Re: Bleach and parrot sick question

I was wondering if it was bleach, if your mother has candles or might have been cooking something... maybe even used an air freshener?

Hope your little green cheek is fine! When in doubt, call up an avian vet!
