CAG & Galah
Hi Guys. Today I brought home a Rose Breasted Cockatoo (Galah) which was in the petshop for quite a while now. She is a hand reared 1 year old with a whole lot of personality. I took to this bird when I first saw her but could not resist her today.
My quandry is that we already have an African Grey (Congo). At the beginning he was quite a challenge as he was in a bad way having been badly handled by previous owners. He's about 3 years old as far as I can make out. However Gizmo is well settled down but is definately a one-man bird. Lately he has allowed my wife to handle him albeit in a limited manner. But it's a step forward.
So far he does not seem too fussed and is not really aggressive towards the Galah. Apart from the normal Grey posture of "come here so I can bite you head down neck fluffed type of thing" He has the run of the house and no cage but a three tiered arrangement of perches, toys, feeders etc that takes up one corner of the lounge. I put the Galah,my Daughter named her pinkie, on the bottom tier. In order to not interfere with his sense of dominance over his area. Do any of you guys see any problems with this arrangement? I do not want to cause any setbacks to the large improvements in Gizmo's behavior and wellbeing in general. But I also wanted to introduce a parrot that was more gentle and approachable to the rest of the family. My thinking might also be erroneous but I thought that she (the Galah) might teach Gizzie that it's OK to let others than I be trusted. Your views greatly appreciated.
Also wishing a great new year to all you guys.
William

An Update. Even though it's early days yet things seem to be OK. Slept in the lounge last night and no drama between the two birds.
Earlier on when at the laptop had my daughter on the left knee, Gizmo on the right shoulder and Pinkie on the right forearm. All were quite content. At one stage Gizzie would try to bite my Daughter if she came too near to me. But lately they seemed to be able to accommodate each other. He seemed OK with her this morning. I don't think it's my imagination and it could be just coincidence. But Gizzie seems to be clamoring for attention a little bit more. A while back I got out of the habit of trying to chew my reading glasses when I was wearing them. This morning it was back to him trying take them off me again, and pulling at my beard to get to my mouth so we could "rub Beaks' so to speak.

Birds see us as their mates. It's kinda like now you have 2 mates instead of one. I hope it works out for them and you. Thanks for making a home for 2 birds that sounded in need.

Cheers SB. After today I'm happy. Both seem to have settled down. Earlier Gizzie flew into the kitchen and Pinkie followed then returned back to the lounge then followed me upstairs to visit for a while. She's feeling at home it seems. This little Galah is an amazing little bird and am really glad to have her with us.
