I am debating on replacing the carpeting in my bird room. It makes sense to replace it with a flooring that I can sweep, and would save a whole lot of time for me.

I need to know what flooring is safe?? this is a small room 7X10,and will never be used for anything else. I would like something that looks ok(doesn't have to be fancy), but more practical than anything.

I have some pro's and cons:

*my large aviary must remain in the bird room
*I have 10 birds in my aviary(divided into 4 sections) and I don't have spare cages for them, nor any space to house 10 extra cages in total, if I removed all the birds.
*6 of the cages can be removed and fit into our bedroom somehow, but it would be really crammed for space, and not enjoyable. Also impossible to keep the bedroom clean as I vacuum in there daily as well...options??

Pro's:
time saver for cleaning the room
cleaner environment for the birds
brighter

I know this is hard to picture, and there are a few problems I have to address.
really what I am wondering is there any type of flooring that we can lay that is safe for birds while the aviary stays in there?

my other concern is when we remove the carpeting, god only knows what we will find underneath. I have no idea that condition the sub floor is in.

this would be so much simpler if I could house my aviary birds in other temporary cages but I still don't have enough space or cages.....any suggestions??

Presently have six Greenwing Macaw (17 yo), Red Fronted Macaw (12 yo), Red Lored Amazon (17 y.o.), Lilac Crowned Amazon (about 43 y.o.) and a Congo African Grey (11 y.o.)
Panama Amazon (1 Y.O.)
Linoleum is cheap, easy to install, and easy to clean.

I called our flooring centre and they have a click linoleum flooring, that is easy to install no glue on the back and no glueing required.....sounds like a good option.

if I purchase this type of flooring, I was thinking of 'airing' it out first for the smell to dissipate.

I am concerned about the smell and if it will affect my birds

I agree with linoleum, or sheet vinyl flooring of some kind, and coved corners would be the ultimate edge treatment.

I think the linoleum or vinyl would be perfect. Lots of style options, too!

the linoleum was a bit expensive $4- per sq.ft....wasn't really looking for a $3-400.00 bill
Now I'm off to Home Depot and Lowes to check out laminate flooring.

the flooring is the easy part, now if I could just figure out my bird dilemma, where to put them etc...

Linoleum will be the cheapest route, and I think the click-linoleum will be better since you won't have to use glue- which is STINKY!

And I think it's a good idea too if you let the pieces air out for a few days before installing them.

came home with a very nice dark colour of linoleum, and underlay....of course everything had to pass inspection with my nose to make sure nothing smelled.
the underlay had no odour what so ever, and the flooring was almost the same....it's being laid as I type, yay!!!

I currently have 18 cages in our bedroom! and we've covered the aviary in large blankets.
they birds are a little more hyper than usual but handling all the noise quite well.

should be completed by late tonight or tomorrow morning.

this will be such a huge improvement for my asthma, and a real time saver cause I won't have to spend my time vacuuming any longer...

When I made my bird room I did pergo flooring and got everything done in one day, cleaned and then moved the birds right in. There was no smell at all and we were very happy. You'd be happier and also be amazed how nasty carpet is when you yank it....

we just removed most of the carpet in the living room...Have a dog that has potty training issues, but it is getting better...talk about gross...the carpet looked okay but man was the padding yuck...we are looking into having a company refinish all the floors in the house...fortunately we have a friend that will bird sit while we are getting everything done...the part that surprised me most was the amount of dust/dirt that was under the carpet and padding...

I hate carpet. I'm so glad our new house will have hardwood flooring throughout- I'm so done with seeing stains and vacuuming. Plus carpets are just gross lol

I can't wait to see pics of the finished floor!

almost done,my nephew and his girlfriend have been working at it since about 3 pm
they love doing this sort of thing. I cooked them a very nice dinner, and they went right back to work.
I have the air purifier on high, the window open, along with the heater going.

actually our carpet wasn't too bad, and the under pad was very good. it wasn't yucky at all.

You got lucky it wasn't bad....all I can say was OMG when I yank mine....we vacuum up the floor really good before putting under layment then flooring. Then quarter rounds then new door.... my birds did not like all the pounding. I got one last room with carpet, living room, will be replacing it within next couple of years. Have a lot on our plate this coming year.....

the room is finally done!, I am very happy with it.
before with carpeting>>after with flooring

I also took some pics this morning of all the cages in our bedroom:eek:

I honestly could not fit them all in, and some are behind others that you can't see in the picture....it was quite an experience to say the least:rolleyes:
