I saw some tabletop perches at a petshop and these items incorporated quite a bit of driftwood in the design. I was quite taken aback - surely driftwood can't be safe? Can it?

from what I've read, no drift wood is not considered safe.

Are you sure it's "drift wood" ? Some of the java stuff looks sort of looks like "drift wood". It's had the bark sandblasted off. What i call "drift wood" could be any type of wood (that's been drifting about) and not all woods are safe. I'd know what my bird was chewing/ingesting, and research what is 'safe".

driftwood can be safe or not safe, it depends what kind of wood it actually is. the problem is you cant tell what kind of wood driftwood it, so i wouldnt use it.

That's what I thought. I am sure it is driftwood, I've lived next to the sea all my life so I've seen it enough times LOL!
It infuriates me that people can sell such things without know squat about it! Grrr...

The ocean water environment contains organisms and many kinds of animal waste in addition to residue from ships.
It is an uncertain environment.
Driftwood can have high salt content.
Lots of crud that embeds into that wood.

I would hope they came from a safe source or its a poorly-thought-out-marketing gimmick, I cant say how many times I been out Mining and started a campfire with driftwood that turned out to be old telephone poles, soaked full of oil-tar creosote...
From little twiggish splinters to big smooth chunks, from rivers to the coast, it dont matter... half of all driftwood is old telephone poles, Im convinced....
