Afraid of the snow?

Are birds ever scared by, or excited by, the snow? I've usually left for work before Alcatraz starts his morning flock calls, so I admit that this could be normal. But it seemed like as soon as the snow started falling this morning, Alcatraz started making lots of noise and running around his cage. Every once in awhile, he'd pause and look out the window. This was lasting much longer than his evening noise. After all, Alcatraz is a Meyer's parrot and therefore fairly quiet, at least for a bird.

My early attempts to take him out of the cage and calm him down were unsuccessful - he just wanted back in the cage. But now he is sitting calmly (and silently) on my shoulder and doesn't seem to want to go anywhere.

I've only had Alcatraz for a few weeks. While he is now about 16 months old, I don't think he had a very good view of the outside at the bird store. So this could be the first time he has seen snow. Coincidence?

Good question. It sounds like the bird is reacting to something never seen before. If you bring snow inside it will of course not look the same. They can see things out of a window that really frighten them.

Hi SB
How did Rosie Alexandra react when she first saw snow, I'm just curious.
Seen lovely pic's where Rosie Alexandra is sitting near the window, whilst it was snowing outside? Looks like she loved it.
We have thunder storms here in South Africa quite often, Mishka was petrified.
There after, whenever it started raining I said Boom Booms Boom Booms.
Now when ever it starts raining, she shouts boom booms Boom booms.
I wonder what she would say if she saw the snow LoL
Great day

I am trying to think of a parrot word for snow because it has been snowing all day long and was forcasted to be just fluries. Rosie seems to like to watch it for a while. She does not seem afraid at all. Ok so we have boom boomers for thunder storms and lets say white fall. That is probably too difficult for a parrot to learn. I'll work in it whilts I am snowbound.

Alcatraz seems to have figured out that the snow isn't going to get him. He's even made some vocalizations like he is trying to talk!

Snowball would be a cute bird word!

Apparently Alcatraz is also terrified of sledders. As soon as he saw them, he started shrieking and pacing. I opened up the door to his cage and he didn't even wait for me to put my hand down for him to stepup... he jumped onto my chest (the only thing he could reach since he doesn't have his flight feathers). I guess I can't complain... he is being very cuddly.

I just worry about what might scare him while I'm at work. Would it be an issue to keep the curtains shut? They are just white cotton so lots of light still comes through, especially since it is a southern exposure.

My chickens are just the same - I tried to let them out after snowfall a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, they stuck their heads out of the coop, clucked a few times, gave me a dirty look (like it was my fault!!) and refused to come out until I put some grain outside as a treat :)

Anyone living on the East Coast USA will have many chances to get their birds used to seeing snow. We are being dumped on again........... up to 30 inches!!
