Hahns Macaw (Berlin), Sun Conure (Skittles), RIP Connor (Black Cap Conure)
ive had my Sunny, Skittles for a couple years now and after the loss of my black cap conure, i went out in search of a new companion for my sunny. i found a hahns macaw that was a year old and very playful, sweet, and gentle.

Berlin, the Hahns, took to skittles quicker than any bird ive ever seen. the 2 get along ten times better than the two conures. in fact, since skittles wings are not clipped but berlins are (they were clipped when i got her), if skittles goes anywhere, even if its just a few feet away, berlin will start squawking (cant wait for her wings to grow out!).

every day, i open both bird cages in their room (bird proof) and when we are home, they are in the living room on their playstand (or my shoulder if thats where skittles decides to go lol). they constantly preen eachother. it started with skittles preening berlin, and skittles getting mad if berlin tried to preen her, but now they both do it with no problem.

i know my sunny is a female but im not sure about Berlin.

anyways, to the topic now. i have a pretty big cage for skittles that is actually a finch flight cage with thicker bars. its pretty decked out with toys and ropes and the like. berlin has my old black caps cage which is half the size and not much room to hang toys. every night, berlin sleeps on the rope closest to skittles cage. during the day, when both cages are open, berlin goes right into skittles cage and sits on the same rope in back every day, like she doesnt want me to see her. im wondering if i could keep the two in the same cage? there really isnt any fighting between the two, really its just when berlin gets a little too close or is about to push her off the play stand, which she tries frequently. do you think they are a good match? any tests i can do? it would be much more helpful and make the room bigger with more space while they are out and about. less toys i would have to buy (since i always buy 2, one for each bird, and hope they both play with it), more toys for berlin since her cage doesnt have the space to hang things, and only one cage to clean.

thank you in advanced =) :green2::orange:

here are some pictures.

this is Skittles cage, the cage i want the 2 to go into together if possible. this is from when i first moved into our new house, so the cage has since been added to with toys and rope perches and the bed is gone since skittles has a habit of shredding them and its just unsafe for her.

Yea that petco cage is more for a Cockatiel and I wouldn't put any mini macaw or sun conures in it. IF they're getting along so well outside of the cage, they might be fine just being together. BUT then you may or may not have aggression issues as they bond being in the same cage together. I would also advice you in getting some more perches then just a couple of rope perches in the cage. I'm also not a fan of rope toys because of what happened to me in the past, it could of ended badly but I got lucky. I came home and found the rope toy destroyed and Malachai ended up with strings wrapped around his toes and legs. I had to use a scissors to remove it cause it was wrapped tight, it could of cut circulation to his foot.

I agree with Mikey that you should consider getting a larger cage if you're going to house them together and also increase the number of perches (both in the top and bottom of the cage) so that they can utilize the whole cage in case one ever feels they need a little space. Also if you house them together there is the chance that they will happier with each others company than yours in which case to regain that you'd have to separate them and that could be sad for Berlin. However, I don't think its a bad idea to try as long as you do it right :) Good luck!
