Lilo - Female Green Cheek Conure ~ Pal - male cockatiel ~ Pheobe - female cockatiel
So I want to get another pet but I can't decide between a parrotlet or a young rescue dog!!! I want a jack Russell pup so I can train it to do agility and enter it into Akc. But I really really want a little blue parrotlet because well one I LOVE parrots and they are perfect and two Lilo will enjoy the company when I'm gone. So what should I do? I love all animals and and rescuing a dog would be awesome! But I just tend to like parrots better.

So sorry for blabbing on but what do you guys think I should do?

Oh and note I do already have a jack Russ mix and she could use the agility cores I made but still, I would love my own dog.

Thanks :)

Pritti (Cherry-Head Conure) -- Fly in Peace my beautiful boy. Forever I'll love you.
Hmmmmm.... welll... I'm a bit partial --- PARROTLET, PARROTLET, PARROTLET.
Correction-- RESCUED PARROTLET, RESCUED PARROTLET, RESCUED PARROTLET.
Lol.

But seriously, like you said, it would be great for Lilo too when you bring home a new feathered friend. They are soooooooo different -- JR vs a wee itty bitty parrotlet. But either will be a love.

I wish I could rescue a parrot but my dad doesn't I don't know why. We will probably start fostering parrots I don't think he wants two rehomed birds. :\ But I wish!

You never know, Lilo might end up hating the bird and viewing it as competition. Birds often don't take well to interloping birds stealing their owners affections....especially a different species. And a jack russel probably couldn't be trusted around a bird unless he was raised around them, putting Lilo at risk. I love Jack Russels, but I wouldn't have one around my bird. If she's used to certain freedoms she would find them restricted when the dog is out. She may adjust ok to that, and then again, she may not. :)

Kalidasa made a very good point about some parrots don't like to share their owner. That is very true!!!! So think it over and make your decision. Also remember they would probably not play together as parrolets are like lovebirds that don't play well with others.

Speaking as the parent who at one point did not understand... take him with you and let him meet some rescues. If he is not a big bird fan now, it might just be the bird you have or he has not met one that makes him understand! My daughter had cockatiels first and they did not win me over to the birdside, sorry cockatiel lovers, still am not a fan....

But then my daughter talked me into a green cheek conure... after that, the second conure was no convincing at all :) And after taking care of them for the summer while she was traipsing around the Mediterranean, I was a total convert and completely understood and loved hanging out with the conures everyday (okay took care of the cockatiels too, but she'll be the first to say I totally spoiled the green cheeks!). And converted so much so, that as I type, I have a bare eyed cockatoo of my own napping on my shoulder and a little chatterbox of a budgie chirping at me. Couple years ago, you never would have convinced me one day I'd be sharing my home and life (and heart) with a dang bird...

So don't give up on your dad, there is always hope!!

I don't want Lilo and the other bird to play I just want them to not be lonely and I always watch Lilo when she is out and I would still with any other pet I get. Oh and she did love jay jay when I had him, they loved each other. It was hard on her when he got adopted. :\

Freespin, I think honestly think I would have more fun with a dog. And I made my own agility track. It has the weave poles and the tub jump thing I almost have everything! Its so exciting! :)

Jenphilly, I know it would be awesome to adopt but you don't know my dad, he hates Lilo, the only reason we still have her is because he loves me. He thinks that all rescue birds are all like Lilo and once he has a idea in his mind it is impossible to change it. He is not the persuading kind. But I'm sorry. But If I could persuade him I would have two parakeets, another cat, and a bunny. But thanks for the advise and hey maybe there is hope!

Would you consider a different breed of agility dog?
As a few others have mentioned, jack russels have been bred to hunt small game and its hereditary to have a very high prey drive. I would be uncomfortable with a small terrier around birds, its just what they were bred to do. :)

A family member has a jrt and he will chase anything small that catches his eye, i also had a friend whos german shorthair will start to salivate and chatter her teeth at the smell of my birds.
All dogs are individuals though, so you may find a good one, just offering a suggestion :)

good luck with whatever you decide :)

Yes at first I was looking at the cattle dogs and the Australian shepherds but I can't find a good dog. I have no idea where to start.

There is always hope... it took Victoria 16 years I believe to convince me to even get a single bird!! Now there are 9 in the house I think... heck I've lost count!!

Good luck with whatever new family member you add and I'll keep hoping for you that your dad converts one day... if I did, its always possible, I really did not like birds before :)

Us parents tend to make those kind of rules about number of pets...

Number of birds... well that's been broken 3 or 4 or 7 times....

Number of cats... two cats ago was our max number....

The key is not try to get everything at once, somehow we just seem to forget the numbers or the max rule especially when there is this adorable face looking at us... and if you have another family member willing to join your side, we really cave when we are out numbered and everyone is ahhing or ooohing.... or maybe its just me... and my daughter is literally the definition of spoiled brat, look it up in the dictionary, her photo is there :)

But seriously, be nice to your dad and let him know you appreciate what he has allowed you to adopt so far... Its hard to turn down and say no to a good kid who is handling their responsibilities really well and such...

We are in the process of adopting a really problemed bare eyed boy from a rescue. Even tho I have the same type of bird and really adore her, it took months of being shown this poor sad bird to finally say okay, lets meet him and see how it goes. Time and patience and gentle persistence goes a pretty long way.

I hope you get your dream rescue bird and I think its awesome you're a big advocate of rescues. Good luck and if you need a parent to put in a good word for you with dad, let me know :)

That's a good idea about the thanking him about all the pets I already have! I haven't done that before! And good luck with adopting the bare eyed C2!

There was a time when I could have cared less about birds also... Now I'm a complete bird freak. What happened :11:

Also, my mom who has two birds, had the FEAR of birds, until I somehow converted her even as a senior citizen!

I agree with everything people said about Jack Russell's. My dad has had 3 before. He now has the most spastic, hyper, blood thirsty, vermin and small animal killing machine I've ever seen. That dog breed, while super intelligent is a major HANDFUL even though small.

Ya our jack Russ mix is a very BIG handful! I'm so glad that she is afraid of lilo or les there might not be a great outcome. So if I do get a pup I would live a shepherd mix. And I have had experience with every pet imaginable so I am educated in the animal department!
