Bring home a handicapped macaw?or not?

hi guys! i'm facing yet another dilemma and would like to seek your advice…

i just saw this ad for a blue & gold that is apparently handicapped, and from the pictures(not mentioned in the ad) is plucking too. i am so so so so tempted to purchase/adopt her!! but the thing is just this feb, i have already brought home a plucked 'too that is already making progress thank god

would it be too overwhelming to bring home another one so soon? i have two sun conures and one amazon too...i don't want to end up in a situation whereby their wellbeing is sacrificed for this><

another thing is that i have important exams at the end of this year and admittedly i will not have a surplus of time to spend on my fids. but it just breaks my heart to think about the possibility that she might end up in a not so appropriate home….

I can't tell you whether or not you should get the B&G as that's up to you.

However, I am curious... do you still have the other macaws you purchased from the pet store? If not, did you rehome them?

That is a decision you need to make. You obliviously know what caring for large birds entails. You said the too you brought home is making progress tha sounds wonderful. Would bringing in another bird so so have a negative impact or her progression?
I'm sure many members would love to save every bird that they could, the reality of it is they can't. Sit down evaluate everything you going on. If you have the time space and resources to rehab and provide for the macaw, go for it. If there is doubts, as hard as it may be you might be better off passing this time.

Oh would love to see some recent pictures of the too you got from the store and hear more on how she's doing.

As Mattroma said, as hard as it might be, if there's any doubt at this time, I think you'll be better off passing. I remember you stated a time before, that you are pretty pressed for time these days. After all, we can't save them ALL. Just think about how thankful you are for having the babies you already have at this time.

What is her disability and how would that impact your flock? I have a hard time making sure I don't bring home too many, but in the end I have to think of my own personal family situation. I am the oldest of 7 children and I feel that one of my siblings is being neglected in many areas (none that would constitute legal child neglect). While I love every one of my siblings and can't imagine life without them, I hope that we are done growing because with the addition of another child I believe that my sister would suffer even more. So ask yourself if you have time for each of your current birds to get as much of you as they need, and if you have enough time to devote to the new bird, perhaps you do. Perhaps instead of adopting her yourself you can help her find a home.

monicaMc: my red-bellied macaws are not with me anymore. one is in a breeding program and the other is with a good owner that has been making progress with her.

i will post in the 'too section about keiko's progress!

this b&g has had her legs and wings broken before and the previous owner did not bring her to the vet causing her bones to fuse in an awkward position. she can perch in the cage but needs support when on somebody's arm.

i guess i will have to seriously consider bringing this gal home...

That's awesome news about the RBM's! I hope they thrive well in their new homes!

As for the B&G, well, she definitely sounds like she's going to be a special case. Only you can decide if you can help her or not and if you have the time to care for her. It doesn't sound like right now is an ideal time, but I don't know what you can or can't handle.

I, too, don't know what you can or can't handle. My view on this is different. You mentioned that the ad said the PLUCKED B&G is FOR SALE. My take is that no inappropriate home is willing to put up money for a plucked bird. If the person knows nothing about macaw, he/she won't put up money for a less than perfect looking macaw. Only people who knows macaws and feesl pity for a plucked macaw will put up money for such. Hopefully somebody with macaw experience who feel pity on the bird like you will pick him up.
