Your best bet is to contact the airline you will be flying with. Some airlines are pet friendly and will allow you to bring your bird into the cabin as a 'carry-on' if the carrier fits under the seat. If you decide to do the cargo option, there are specifics for the carrier you will need, but Delta and American are the best options for going that route.

I would recommend making some calls, both to the California Dept. of wildlife and also to your local Hawaii branch of government who deals with this. When we were on a road trip, we were stopped at the Nevada/Calif. border and they went through our truck looking for meat, plants and animals. We had nothing like that, so I don't know what would have happened if we did.

It shouldn't be a big issue flying from Hawaii to California, however the opposite may not be as easy.

Here's one site that might be a good start!
Animal Industry Division | Importing Birds and Poultry

Another good site
How to import parrots and other birds into Hawaii

If you have a way to prove that your bird was born (or lived) in Hawaii (i.e. leg band and/or microchipping), then it may not be as hard to bring your bird back into Hawaii.

Definitely contact the agricultural departments of both states, the airlines and avian vets! These are the places and people who could help you best with your decision!

ParadiseHI, congrats on your upcoming college adventure! Can I ask you a question about having a bird in Hawaii? We are thinking of retiring there from California, and were wondering (knowing how messy birds are!) if the birds cause any kind of bug situation? I know it's the tropics, and bugs come with the territory...but I was just wondering:eek:

sure. :)
birds generally don't cause bug situations. as long as you have airtight containers it shouldn't be any more of a problem than it is on the mainland. for a little while i had some problems with those little seed moth things but it was solved when i started putting seed and pellets in the freezer or the fridge.

I've always wondered about that. From the mainland TO Hawaii. I could she how they'd be more strict about letting animals in, in order to protect their native species and small inescapable land mass they're on. However, I think CA is pretty strict about stuff like that too. I admit I haven't researched, but it does cross my mind about going to Hawaii. I think it would be TOO humid for my liking anyway : ) I'll just have to go there on vacation again someday.

I recall a member a looking to purchase a bird from the mainland to the island but passing due to the regulations.
Being dealing with this for the past few days and any person that is moving to the islands and want to bring their pet bird should be aware of the following.

First, you need to contact from the Plant Quarantine Branch. Call (808) 832-0566. And fill out a form and send them $5.00 in return they send you a permit to transport your bird to Hawaii which you need in your hands when you arrive there.

Second, you need to contact Poultry and Bird Import Permit from the Livestock Disease
Control Branch. Must be affixed to shipping crate. Issued only to
accredited veterinarians. Call (808) 837-8092, 7 days a week,
8:00AM through 4:30PM Hawaii Standard Time or email request
to [email protected].

3. Health Certificate. Issued within 10 days of entry. Must include:
a) Description of birds

b) Leg band or microchip numbers (except budgies, canaries,
cockatiels, doves, finches, lovebirds)

c) Statement birds are free of external parasites and symptoms of
transmissible diseases or evidence of recent exposure to
parasites or diseases

d) Statement birds have not been vaccinated with a vaccine
containing a live agent during the 60 day period before
shipment

4. 7-Day Isolation: Birds must be isolated in a mosquito-free/
mosquito-proof enclosure under the supervision of the veterinarian
issuing the health certificate. The isolation must be for a minimum of
7 days (168 hrs), and birds must enter the State within 36 hrs of
completion of the isolation. (except budgies)

The birds shall be released and shipped in a mosquito-proof container.

ENTRY INTO THE STATE WILL BE PERMITTED ONLY THROUGH THE HONOLULU INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT.

to be 100% honest i technically am not on my college adventure yet. i'm a sophomore in high school. i just want to be ready. my parents and i are talking about whether i should bring my bird with me or not. it's really *my* responsibility since i was the one who wanted it. i don't know though. i really want to bring it and i know i would do a lot better with it around. but the whole quarantine thing is really horrible.

i was thinking california because it's the closest, but i also am interested in other states like washington, oregon, arizona, all those ones pretty close to hawaii (well as close as i can get)

any advice about whether i should just leave it at home or not?

Well, as far as leaving your bird or not, I think only you would be qualified to answer that. You know "how" bonded you and your little friend are. You don't want to study in HI? Is your major not in your state? You still have a little time to think this through. Good luck :)

The only parrot species that California doesn't like is quaker parakeets/monk parrots.

Bringing your bird to the mainland is easy, all you need is a health certificate within 10 days and a airline approved container... they can fly on the plane with you....

however bringing it back to Hawaii is very hard....

I am also in Hawaii... (Oahu)
we have some fabulous bird clubs,

No, it's a bit more complicated than that. You better have proof of ownership of your bird to ensure they weren't wild caught and being smuggled in. You also have to have permission for them to be brought into the mainland as well. You also must check with the airlines, there are only a few that allow birds on their flights and only during certain times of the year. It's a tremendous amount of leg work and research and needs to be looked into months before the trip is scheduled.

Then there's the getting to the airport portion, where you have to be there as early as 8 hours before your flight to check in by some airlines, because there are a limited number of pets aloud on each flight and it's first come first served. I have done a a little research into this issue because I had planned to spend several months if not a few years in St. Thomas Virgin Islands and wanted to take our bird(s) with us and eventhough the VI is part of the U.S. it was going to be quite an ordeal.

Hawaii is part of the United States so it's easier than from the Virgin Islands. Since it is technically a state.

There's one of those catch 22 things... GOING BACK to Hawaii may be problematic. They have the most restrictive import/export/quarantine requirements of any state.

Generally all you need for a closed banded bird in California from one state to another is a vet health certificate, but hatch certificates usually come in handy as well, especially if the bird isn't banded. (There are some birds, i.e. quakers for example, that are classified as agricultural pests and not allowed in.)

Here are the California contacts:
CDFA > AHFSS > AHB > Budgerigars, Parakeets & other Psittacine Bird Entry Requirements

Im like 94% sure on this but they have to be quarantined for mosquitoes and maybe a few other things which I can't recall
