Hi there,

About 2 weeks go I noticed that there were ants around Hugo's area. There weren't many but they have increased with the rain we have had after the drought. It's got very bad and I wanted to know if anyone has any advice on getting rid of them without it being toxic for Hugo. The ants don't normally come this time of year because we are going into Winter but maybe because of the late rains they have decided to make a last dash before it gets cold.

I put fresh veg and fruit out for Hugo daily and clean it up daily as well. I also clean the area daily and change the newspaper etc.

Do you guys use natural remedies to kill the ants or is there a product specifically for birds so that you can put down or spray?

Yes, there is!

Try white vinegar, it works for most insects. Sorry, I can't think of anything else.

Let us all know how it works out. :)

Hey there Ecclipse how is the boss doing LoL Hugo !!!!!!
I don't know how you do it, school and all.....
I had ant's (haha my nickname) surrounding Mishka's outside cage.
I was too scared to spray anything, boiled the kettle and poured.
I repeated this a few times, and they disappeared. As winter is drawing so near, I doubt that they will reappear.
Good luck AND KEEP WARM !!!!!!

Hahaha Antoinette - didnt think of the nickname. I went into the site that SB suggested and I put vaseline (petroleom jelly) on the entrance and around - am holding thumbs. Will let you guys know if it works because its a cheap solution....my one friend who doesnt know parrots asked if I couldnt get Hugo to eat the ants. I had to stop myself from giggling...hahaha. They were serious, I had a mental pic of Hugo dashing after the ants...thanks for the tips guys! :)

Sure the Vaseline is going to work, now you be careful around the cage, can't have you being injured !!!!!!!
Giggle giggle, imagine Hugo eating the ant's, he would be eating his aunt haha.
Talking about pets eating strange things, we had a little poodle, when I was younger. When we netted the pool, collecting all the Beatles, she used to eat the Beatles, just like we eat prawns Yuck

WAHAHAHA - Antoinette - your such a funny bunny!!! Ladies and gentleman - I am proud to announce that Vaseline is the way forward. My ant problem is gone!!!! For those of you who dont know me very well - Im a little accident prone so Antoinette is spot on with the warning - hahahahaha. I was balancing on a table thinking "This could go either way!" I used a knife and smeared the hole with vaseline then around the area. It really works!!!! It makes the area a little yellow but I dont even notice it because its by the ceiling board. Thanks SB for your brilliant advice!!!!

I always used to have an ant problem in my iguana's rain forest and in my roach and worm tubs and I followed all the advice and nothing worked as well as vaseline.

I also sprinkled Cinnamon in all his potplants and used chalk on his trees - it also worked well, but that was last year.

I noticed ants this weekend again so the chalk, cinnamon and vaseline solution lasted a whole year!

Have heard of the cinnamon and chalk, now the Vaseline. Worked for a year wow, I will certainly make a note of this.

Thanks for sharing the info :D
