Green cheek conure-1
Hi
I am new to forum, I just brought home a baby green cheek conure, she is three months old, she has adjusted well, very cuddly and loving and has a very large cage. I wanted to know if I could introduce a crimson bellied baby in one month and they be kept together in the same cage. I live in a one bedroom apartment and don't have room for 2 large cages. I really want her to have a friend when I go to work, and the breeder really raised the GCC so well, I thought I could bring home another baby.

It depends a lot on the individual birds. Those birds are related, so the chances are higher, just be aware that generally, introducing 2 birds meant to live in the same cage takes THREE cages, one for each of them, and on neutral one for them to move into together. And some parrots will always hate one another for reasons we cannot fathom, so if you don't have a plan B, I don't suggest it. However, I do think having a friend for a bird who would otherwise spend too much time alone is a good idea. Just be aware it could change your relationship with your current bird if she bonds with the other bird. Not saying that would be bad, just different.

A side note, since the two species are so similar, it would be wise to insure you have 2 of the same gender so there is no chance of hybridization. I will not get into the argument for or against hybrids, but I think most of us can agree that we prefer not to see accidental hybrids who could be mistaken for pure blooded species and muddy up the gene pool by accident. When people buy, say, a Catalina Macaw, they don't think it is a Blue and Gold, nor does it look like a Scarlet. They know they are buying a mixed bird. However a Green Cheek and a Crimson Bellied Conure may produce some confusing looking babies who could get mislabeled.

So in short, I love the idea of getting your bird a friend, and they could potentially be cage mates, just read up a LOT on how to do it, don't cut corners, and have a plan for if they cannot share a cage. Make sure you are fine with your conure loving her new friend more than she loves you. Also, please be responsible, DNA sex, and get two of the same gender to prevent accidental and confusing hybridization.

Ok so I will wait till I move to a larger space will then get two other cages and see if I can eventually introduce a female crimson, I did not think green cheeks could mate with another species, but they are so closely related, I DNA sexed Pichu, I think she socialized with everyone in my building, so would accept another bird and still love me too, I will wait a year before I consider adding another bird.

When you do try to add another, be sure to practice quarantine!!!!

While you mention it... Might as well get a full new bird vet check up, including virus testing for the contagious deadly diseases which ARE around even from "good" sources. They recommend quarantine for 30-60 days, but I once bought a bird from a specialty bird store who didn't start showing PDD symptoms for 6 months! That's way past normal quarantine. Scary.

Usually the symptoms will start showing up during stress cause their immune system is weakened making them susceptible and unable to fight the diseases and the dominant virus within will come knocking. But yes it is wise to have them tested!!!!

You'd think, right? That's why they say first 30-60 days or so is when they're stressed coming to a new environment, but 6 months later, I couldn't believe it! I found out after the fact that the bird store bought her from a "broker" who got the birds from Lord knows where. Plus people I've known who had birds with PDD or worse PBFD, plus stories you hear and read... There's a REASON I'm so disease paranoid now unfortunately. Well, this is another topic all together.

Yet another reason why it would be wise to wait until you are in a bigger place :)

Here's one conure that's believed to be a Crimson Bellied hybrid with Green Cheek Conure, maybe even Maroon Bellied.

A member here has a green cheek x rose crown hybrid.

And I've been gathering quite a few photos of other conure hybrids. Even the small conures and large conures can hybridize together!

So yes, hybridization is definitely possible!
