Shell toys

Ive seen some bird toys that are made of shells . Does anyone have any [and was their any problems with them ?]

Kiwi likes shell toys- he crushes them and from my understanding, they are a good source of calcium. But I only get the ones commercially made because the shells have been sterilized and have not been treated like decorative ones often are. I think collected shells (like from the beach) can be boiled, but I would never use the ones you buy at home decorating stored because they sometimes spray them with varnishes or dyes them ext....

I would also only give them to the bigger birds who can crush them. A little guy may be able to break a piece off, but may not be able to crush it up and then they have a razor-sharp hazard to play with.

I have toys with shells in my smaller bird cages, and they have't been able to break them...they usually chew on them a bit, but they are still intact. My bigger guys seem to ignore them on their toys, they are much more interested in the wood on the toys.
Maybe it depended on the size of the shells as well.
