Xingu and Mismi, white-winged parakeets 1.1.0
Hey All!

My little Mismi is about seven and a half weeks now and white wings are (theoretically) supposed to be weaned at around six weeks. She has been doing a bit of the "baby bob" Sunday and yesterday, so I took her back to the pet shop for a weigh-in and she'd only lost about 4 grams; not too shabby for the stresses of getting to a new home and adapting.

She seems to get more frustrated with seed than get any actual eating done. That in itself doesn't worry me if she'll never be a big seed eater, but the only things I can get her to eat right now are veggies and dried fruit (mainly papaya and mango - she throws banana chips as far away as she can get them as if they disgust her). I'm concerned because those particular fruits are somewhat high in sugar, but must admit to being completely naive when it comes to what birds should have in their diets in what quantities. Her seed is sunflower seed free, and I have seen five or six hulls in her dish, but that's about it. I've also been offering fruit zupreem, but she just flings that out of her way as well, though at least it gets to stay in her bowl.

Her clutch mates at the store refused baby food yesterday morning, but I brought some home yesterday just in case she seems to get thin (would this be a more nutritionally balanced food that I should offer her? I haven't done a feeding yet as she attacked her fruit when I got home and stopped bobbing). She also doesn't at all seem interested in water, which I'm guessing she doesn't need as much with all the fresh veggies? In case she didn't understand the concept of her water bowl, I gave her a bath yesterday and she was not at all concerned with taking in more water. I know how to test for dehydration in mammals and reptiles, but again, birds are a mystery for me. I am a one-bird household, so don't have another bird to let her watch eat to be a "teacher bird", though my best friend has an amazon that I could potentially try with if you all think it would be beneficial.

All in all, crop always has food in it when I palpate, but I'm worried about how well-rounded her nutrition is. Grocery day is Thursday and I hadn't been expecting to get a bird this weekend, so her veggie base is frozen peas, corn cut fresh off the cob, and peeled carrots, with something else mixed in daily - boston lettuce (actually darker than romaine and hydroponically grown with root ball intact so it stays alive and growing - so cool!), cucumbers, apple, etc., aka, whatever happened to be in my fridge already. I do have a mix bag with some cauliflower and broccoli in the fridge as well, but haven't tried that - maybe when I get home tonight. Any advice or thoughts would be welcome!
