Hi!
We recently started to move into a new house. It's all carpeted except the kitchen and the laundry room, neither of which are good places for a bird cage, so Watson is going to have to be in a carpeted room. Are there any safety hazards with carpets, and carpet cleaners? Also, he flings food sometimes, so does anyone have tips on keeping the floor clean around the cage? Most of the seed catchers I've seen aren't too pretty.
Thank you very much.

Cheap carpet protectors sold at Home Depot or hardware stores. Flexible clear plastic. It's sold on a roll where you can cut the amount you want. It's sold by the foot.

Yeah, if you don't want a skirt then you have to protect the carpet. It's really difficult to get the seeds and mess out of it even with an industrial strength vacuum. I have two cages in my room for quarantine and I just put the newspapers around the cage. If they are gonna be there permanently you probably need some nicer looking way to protect the carpets. My birds walk on carpets all the time and forage for the seeds that fell out of the cage, LOL. I don't think it can pose any danger for them. :)

You could also see if Home Depot has any linoleum remnants -remnants are usually cheaper because they're leftovers. Then you could just lay it down on top of the carpet...

It doesn't matter what you use as nothing will be pretty laying on top of carpets either if you don't like the seed guards. We ended up laying blankets or towels around the cage where we can just take it outside for a good shake or wash them if needed to be. Even after we rid the carpet, we still lay towels down due to them flinging their fresh food everywhere....they will make one heck of a mess on my pergo flooring if I didn't do that....and I also have a poo shooter, Malachai the black lory.....lol

I just bought a pack of large kitchen floor tiles and put them down on top of the carpet around the cage. They look fine and it's easy to keep clean.

I personally use inexpensive decorative rugs to protect the carpet (like from Ross, but not the shaggy/fluffy kind). I just like the look better than linoleum or the plastic floor protectors, but those are both good options too. If you get a rug vs. linoleum/plastic OR poo gets on your actual carpet, wait for it to dry before you try to clean it. When dry, you can pick the bulk up with a or vacuum it up. If it stains at all, the stain will be much smaller and easier to treat than if you smear wet poo around. I use spot shot on the carpet and it works fine, I do not care about stains on the rugs as long as big chunks of poo aren't on them (I take the rugs outside and power hose every couple months and they get to needing replacement every few years ). Using a little spot cleaner every so often shouldn't bother your bird, but if you CLEAN the carpets with any smelly chemicals, the bird should be moved to a different area of the house for a day or 2 until the smell dissipates. I personally use our steam vac without chemicals, just water, and it still pulls up dirt and cleans the carpets fine (well, fine enough for me). If there is some kind of odor you want to get out, sprinkle baking soda, let sit and vacuum it up. But unless it's just a tiny bit, any kind of cleaning chemicals should not be used around parrots, or the parrot should be moved away from the smell until it dissipates.

we bought the thin plywood sold at lowes/home depot and got sticky tiles that blended perfectly with the carpet. we have about a foot extra around the cage either way and it looks nice and so easy to clean!
