Need help identifying new pet!

I'm American but currently stationed in Germany.

I just bought a bird yesterday, and I need help identifying him. The place I bought him from had him listed as simply "Gross Sittiche" (German for Big Parrot) I didn't realize that's what it meant and thought it was the species. Brought him home and realized that of course, nothing is listed as just that. He is appx 11 inches in length. Bright green breast and head (almost yellow!) with a vibrant colored orange beak (top and bottom). the feathers on his wings are a dark shade of green, black, yellow, and red. His tailfeathers are immaculate, over half of his total size. They are black, with a little bit of light blue mixed in.

I was at first thinking he's an Eclectus but I have been able to find none in my research with such long tailfeathers, nor this bright shade of green. Any suggestions?

I would add a picture but my daughter (4 years old) has apparently misplaced my camera. ugh!

Thanks for any and all help!

Hi there, great forum, with lovely members.
Very difficult to try identify a bird, from a description, without a picture.
Any background information on the bird?
When purchasing the bird, did you adopt it, was it from a breeder, a pet shop or a private sale. Any idea how old the birds is, were no papers given to you?.
Sorry so many questions, just curious.
Hopefully other members will be able to assist, with the description.

Wish we had a pic! With such long tail feathers it is either a species of conure or macaw.

There were absolutely no papers given to us, it was from a German pet store/garden store. He's absolutely beautiful! Wish I could get a picture....

The closest I could come after a few google searches is the Perfect Lorikeet... but that still doesn't quite match your description.

The Perfect Lorikeet is rather close, but like you said - not it. The tail feathers you see in the picture are in deed that dark - and rather long... I just can't place him!

Also, he has really bold colors on his wings. and the Perfect Lorikeet seems more monochromatic.

Thank you so much! I've been doing some research on him but I can't much information on having one as a pet - more about them in the wild. Anything specific I should know about their demeanor, talking behaviors? Right now he still seems a bit shell shocked and not really friendly. Didn't know if this was usual or if he'll eventually warm up. Any suggestions? All I've had before was canaries and rosellas, so he's completely different for me. Very interested to learn!!!

Yup definitely a regent. We have a few other members with regents or other congenerics (princess and superb parrots). I don't recall who off the top of my head, but you should be able to browse through previous threads to find them.

All three are incredibly beautiful birds. If I get another bird I will try to find a superb or regent.

He's such a brat! Very playful but not ready to be held quite yet. he likes to hop around your hand and make you think he's going to step up and then he flies. We ended up having to turn all the lights off in the house tonight just so we could get him onto a hand to get him back in a cage. I just feel bad using a net, afraid he'll hurt himself, so I'll try everything first. Any suggestions? Very stubborn, that one.

A net? No probably not a great way to go. Towel's are handy though.

Get a hand dowel or dish towel, you can throw that over him and scoop him up. Different birds react differently to this, most wont like it at first, but it's easy to 'cuddle' them for a bit in their towel and it's a handy way to be able to get control of them in any situation. Even when they trust you if they get injured or get stuck somewhere they may panic and being able to towel them is a HUGE help.

Auggie and I play around with his towel (a washcloth actually for a conure size bird) and he loves it. I scoop him up and make a birdy-burrito. He's comfy for a while, but then he wrestles his way out (I don't hold him in).

Just to clarify this is a handy way to be able to pick them up and move them when other methods aren't working. This isn't a means of them getting more comfortable with you. The 'cuddling' reference was to point out that they can get comfortable with the towel after some time.
