I will be moving soon into a new apartment and I'm not sure how to transport my bird. I don't have a reliable air conditioner so I can't just let him be out because I need the windows down. It is a long ride and I don't know whether to put him in a small box or a small cage. Would he be better if he can see me? I don't know and I would appreciate the help.

Most of us have travel cage for transporting our birds around in the car. Usually set it up at home so the bird is accustom to it and doesn't stress. Start off with short trips around town and then the longer trips are much easier. Some travel cages are more expensive , fold up , better quality, etc. If you're doing lots of travelling that's what i'd get. otherwise a cheaper pet carrier might be a good choice for you. Regardless of model, seat belt it in and turn off passenger side airbag. Welcome to the forum.

When I moved with my sun conure, I didn't have the nice carrier that I have now, but I put her in her carrier on the front passenger seat (and I was only moving about a mile and a half). She was totally fine. I worried about her more than she worried. She had fun. I had a small travel cage that I set up in my new house for her (movers were doing her big cage) and I moved her in her carrier to the travel cage, then put her upstairs, away from all the commotion of movers.

I now use the carrier that Gilbert came home in (he was flown to my local airport, so it is an airline approved carrier). I love it. It feels safer on long car rides.

My GCC Kiwi has traveled multiple time to vet and back and forth from my home to my parents ( who live a few hours away) in her pet carrier. It's a great size for her and it's open. I got it for about $24. Here the link: http://amzn.to/1p6ZFVH check it out :)

I also did a review on the carrier on my Youtube channel if your interseted. I show how I set it up and I also show Kiwi getting in and everything. SunshineBeauty312 - YouTube

When I brought Ducati home his previous owner still had the cardboard box she picked him up in. She put some paper towels in there for traction and put a seat belt around him in my front seat. We had to go over a couple of speed bumps through her housing complex and he was fine. He made hiccup sounds everytime we went over one. I'm taking him to the vet today and rather than setting up his smaller cage (which is considerably smaller, but looked like it sat outside for a while since she was scrubbing stuck on newspaper off it when I pulled up), I'm going to try and use a small pet carrier that I got for our small dog.

It ended up being too small for her so I thought maybe it would work for birdie vet visits. It has a little carpet insert so he's not slipping everywhere. If it works I want to try and put a little perch in there for him.

Aren't you afraid of your bird falling off of the perch while driving? Or that he will hit it on bumps?

I use one perch, mounted low with no toys. They're pretty good at learning to ride, not much different than a tree branch in the wind. My hen nape learned to ride the motorcycle behind a windscreen. She now has no problem riding the steering wheel around corners, LOL. I use a "neck perch" worn around my neck that she perches on when in the truck. It's so cute when she braces herself when i take off from a stop. If i go to slow down she runs to my chest to get her balance.

So he wouldn't go in the little pet crate at all so I ended up having to use the little cage. I put one of his perches in there and he was fine the whole time. I kind of "mom-armed" the cage when we'd stop and take off and he had a seat belt around it

Well I'm moving 2 hours away and the entire ride is huge hills and sharp curves and such. It isn't a smooth ride, I'm just worried about my little guy.

I just drove 6 hours with the new birdy, Iris. She was in a travel cage and it had only the dowel perch that came with it, but she did just fine and I promise there were a lot of bumpy roads.

I'm going to get her a nicer perch for later travelling, but she did great.

We used to take our previous GCC in a smaller cage on a 3 hour one-way drive to our vacation cottage (that we don't have anymore) and he not only did well, but he loved the trip and all the extra treats he got on vacation.
