Lilo - Female Green Cheek Conure ~ Pal - male cockatiel ~ Pheobe - female cockatiel
I had to bring Lila to the vet and had her blood tested. She has a mild infection so she will need oral medicine for two weeks. But I am going to Oregon next week to pick out a lab puppy from a breeder :D then I will be camping. The vet said she needs the medicine soon or it will get worse! So my question is can I bring Lilo camping???? it will be in a fifth wheeler but it smells of cigar smoke (the owner before us smoked) its not as bad but there is still a hint of it. I can keep the windows open and if I bring her, we WILL cook outside! There is a burn band around here so no camp fires! Will it work? Please help!!! I will be bring the fish, he travels often and he needs feeding! Please help! I know that people do go camping with there parrots and I need her to get medicine. :rainbow1:

Unless you're going to be camping in areas that might be smoky from the fires or areas that receive daily/nightly insect spraying, take her with you.....I assume you've already washed down all indoor hard surfaces & if not fabric drape/curtains, I might want to do that.....all of my birds have been on road trips anywhere from 60 to 1,800 miles at a time, just be sure to let her ride in the cab with you, when moving, instead of in the camper.....

Have fun ! ! !

Great I want to bring her! And we cleaned that camper for hours to get that smell out! And that was about 3-4 years ago! I will make sure that there is no febreze or any other air cleaner! Thanks for all the helpful reply's!

Any old air fresheners should not be a worry, the only reason I mentioned cleaning of surfaces is the possibility of the bird picking up tar & nicotine residue from the surfaces, but in the time you've had the camper I would assume you have given it regular cleanings.....

Actually, if you have a smaller travel cage, you could even set her outside with you at campsites...my guys are travel junkies & one or two usually go to town with me.....

Enjoy your trip.....

My concern is the stress. I worry that the stress of the camping and the puppy may make her infection worse. Plus, there is a much greater chance of her escaping or getting stepped on or sat on in that situation. Honestly, it sounds like you need to skip the trip. In general I am for taking birds along, but no sick pet should be under the added stress. She needs the medication, so you can't leave her home, but does the camping trip HAVE to be right no? And if it does, do you HAVE to go? I have cancelled plans when my pets needed me, it is part of being a pet owner. Also, you did not mention the length of the trip, how far from home you will be, and how far from the vet you will be. Stress alone can open a bird up to infection - the fact that she already has one is a HUGE red flag. I suggest skipping this trip, but take her on the next one.

How long does Lilo need to have the medicine for?

So it sounds like the trip is just to pick out a puppy, not bring it home right now? Can it be postponed?

I think it would be awkward and just "extra" work to bring an exotic pet on a trip, BUT many people do it and they enjoy it. I suppose it's a little like bringing a human baby camping. You need all sorts of extra accommodations and considerations. Also, if you do decide to take her, make sure she doesn't overheat in the camper. :)

Yes I agree with both of you on the stress. I am not bring the puppy home till September or late August. I am just seeing winch one I like the best, winch one picks me out. She gets very mad and depressed when I leave her alone and I have no one to watch her. My grandma is going camping and the lady who usually watches her won't be around. Even if she was here, she would NOT give her the meds. She hates her :( I can't stay home I want to very bad but I can't my dad hates her and if I said am staying home because of her, he would freak out! But I wish could stay home! I don't know for how long or how far... I will be going over a pass that's all I know. I will get more info.

Aaaah, the difficulties of being a bird loving minor with non bird-loving parents :( I have been there, it is tough. In that case, even though i dont think it is best, yes, you need to bring her with you. Unless there is a chance of boarding her at the vet?

Maybe you can "get sick" right before the trip so you have to stay home?

Please let us know how the trio goes. Be very careful. It to allow the bird to escape, and make sure she gets enough sleep and doesn't get too not or too cold. Be VERY vigilant with her meds, and do your best to reduce stress. Not ideal, but few things in life are :) keep us posted!

Oops I posted a reply on a different thread! Ok so we will be camping from Thursday or Friday to Sunday and we will be two hours away from home. Is that good? And I could pretend but I guess it would be too obvious! :p

i dont think pretending is a good idea - honesty is best, especially when you want your parents to trust and respect you so they dont make you get rid of your pet.

All kidding aside, remind him that it is honorable to stick with a commitment, not to dump and run when you meet adversity.

I feel for you. That is a tough situation - as SilverSage mentioned, a bird loving minor living under your parents rules. About how long til you're able to move out? Just do your best not to make dad mad concerning the bird as long as you live there! Good luck on the trip. :)
