Out of curiosity, I was wondering if anyone shipped a bird -either from a breeder/store/ ect - while staying at home. And if so, what was the process for you?

There used to be some shipping agents who would come to your house or office to pick up animals that were to be shipped, but with all of the changes in airport security, those services may have been stopped.

Depending on where the bird/animal was being shipped to and how much time & effort was involved in the shipping, using a shipping agent often doubled the shipping costs or more.....

Are you looking to ship inter island or from the mainland? They are very different processes.

Weco, I've heard about agencies around 2 years ago, but I thought it was a scam and I didn't really look into it. I think there's one agency around, but I browsed the website real quick.

Silversage, if I was to ship, it would be inter island because the flight's are way shorter (20-50 minutes). And it would be cheaper to fly out to meet the parrots--if I do end up having to fly out. I'd choose Maui because I know two people that live there and can show me around.
I didn't want to make it specifically towards inter island/mainland due to the high difference, but I was mostly wondering how the process usually works so I can add in the laws for Hawaii.

Shipping inter Island is easy through Aloha Air Cargo, you simply call them, book the flight, follow directions.

I think that's where i got stuck. So far, I've been only reading things on the HDOA website.
I have to thank the web designers for making their website look easier to use

Yeah, as far as I know Aloha Air Cargo is the only way to ship inter island. No special permits required. There is a LOT of hullabaloo involved in getting birds here from another state, including a 7 day mosquito free quarantine at the vet!

With thank the hullabaloo! I swore I heard a choir when I heard
no "special permits". The 7 day quarantine had me so down when I first started researching how to get birds here I almost gave up. I'm pretty pumped now, thought it could be from all the sugary stuff I had today, but who knows anymore

On the side, I guess a 20-50 minute trip to the neighbor islands aren't so bad ;), now I would just have to track down breeders or stores to "visit", or what I call a mini vacation.

Oh, I found someone from the Big Island you might want to google - not sure if he is still breeding or not, but he writes for bird magazines all over the world. Check out E.B. Cravens. Not sure if he is any good yet, I just found him today.

I'll look into him. I've heard him before...but all I know is that he is pretty famous in the avian world.
Really hope he is breeding still too! It would be really cool to meet him if I had the chance

Trust me I am doing a lot of reading! I find it interesting how his view of responsible aviculture directly count opposes that of dr. Steve Hartman.

Oh no! Conflicts between two Dr.s!
I should catch up with the reading when I know I won't be too distracted reading LOL. But this seems like an interesting topic to read about.

It is. Hartman's life work is domesticating parrots to make them better pets, while Cravens believes that their natural state should be preserved. All of parrot keepin is controversial, it is always a good idea to hear and understand as many views as possible.

That is really controversial...is there any "I'm in the middle"?.

(Oh no, his opinion) I would try to conserve the species as much as possible now since its way too late to "return" the birds as their popularity is increasing. This could also double as a good thing to keep their population up. But we should definently try to conserve whatever we can at this point and try to keep their natural state preserved like Craven said.
