I am looking to either get a grey of a goffins. I want to know yalls opinions on which is a better pet. Which one gets along with other birds more likely? Does one need more attention then the other? Are their diets different? I am also posting this in the cockatoo forum also.

I am trying to decide between a grey and a goffins. Which one makes a better pet? Does one of them have a tendency to posibly get along with other birds? Are their diets different? Does one need more attention than the other? I know they need large cages but does one need a larger one? Are hormones a hhuge issue with greys or goffins? I also posted this on the greys forum.

I have neither of these birds, so I'm just telling you what I remember from my research when I first decided to get a bird of my own.

Goffins, like all cockatoos, require a lot of your attention and time. Cockatoos are very needy birds. They're also generally very mechanically adept and good at learning how to open their own cages. So a cage that has pretty foolproof closing mechanisms would be a good idea. They really, really need foraging toys that they can spend their time taking apart.

African Greys are more.. sensitive? And extremely prone to becoming one person birds. That is, a bird who only wants the attention of ONE person, and everyone else is dirt. They also need a lot of attention and cuddling, but I believe they are not necessarily very -snuggly-.

Like, a cockatoo will want you to be scritching it and such all the time, whereas the grey just wants to be with you. Not necessarily touched all the time.

Greys will need puzzle toys and plenty to keep their brains active.

Nearly all birds require the same diet, with some exceptions. Pellets, fresh fruits and vegetables (daily), limited seeds and treats, etc -- will suffice for both of these species.

Honestly, I don't think either greys or any of the cockatoos are really considered "easy birds". I would do a lot more research before even thinking about getting one.

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
I have both Goffins and Timneh Greys and agree with the sentiments of Selestine.

That said, consider me a huge advocate for Goffins! Two of mine were wild caught 30+ years ago and have been in my home for 25. They yielded 3 handfed, nicely adjusted, awesome offspring. With the exception of the male parent, (by himself due to aggression against his mate) they essentially live in a flock situation inside a large room/aviary with a Citron, Moluccan, and Timneh Grey. The female "momma bird" has tamed very nicely in all aspects except she will not perch on a finger, but can be approached and drawn into my chest and willingly cuddle. All 3 offspring are immensely tame and personable but have notably different personalities.

In my experience both Greys and Goffins can co-exist with other species. I also suspect any of my Goffins would be a bit more "needy" as solitary birds with the exception of the oldest and most tame offspring.
Goffins are voracious chewers and need the largest cage you can provide, filled with distractions. And yes, they are talented escape-artists!
My sole surviving Grey is a bit standoffish and no longer enjoys handling despite the fact he was hand-raised in my home.

Greys can be a quieter bird ,Can be tempermental ,like randomly bite without warning .Like my other birds all give you notice their not happy. Not a cuddily bird ,but needs lots of your attention and stimulation .Their very smart birds. If I was to get another Grey [id be looking into a female Timneh]

I believe there is a huge difference in personality between greys and goffins -- I don't think they are at all alike. Cockatoos are goofy characters and greys are more "regal".

That's not to say that greys can't be fun, just.. these two birds are really NOTHING alike, aside from generally being of similar size.

Presently have six Greenwing Macaw (17 yo), Red Fronted Macaw (12 yo), Red Lored Amazon (17 y.o.), Lilac Crowned Amazon (about 43 y.o.) and a Congo African Grey (11 y.o.)
Panama Amazon (1 Y.O.)
I've had both.

Apples and oranges. With the common ground that both species can be quite neurotic, and both can become pluckers.

CAGS get handled on their own terms and are more aloof.

Goffins are toos. They want to be handled a lot.

Both are flock birds.

Both birds need a lot of stimulation or they end up resembling grocery store chickens. They both need to self entertain.

As others have posted, they have entirely different personalities and dispositions; your goal is to choose a bird best suited to your expectations and desires. Perhaps the best choice is the one that more closely mirrors your own personality!

Scott I have never seen pictures of your flock, I would love to!

I have dozens of pics on my iPhone, but it apparently cannot directly post to a forum. Not a huge fan of social media either....

I hear you about social media... The way I (and many people do it) is with Photobucket. I have the app on my iPhone and iPad. It's so easy.

You should be able to connect your iphone to the computer and transfer your pics on there then add them with the paperclip at the top of the replies

Kalypso didn't you just recently get your tiel. I would advise you to wait a bit longer before looking into another bird. That way you can get to know your tiel better and if this is for a friend for it as your inqury about the rose bourke parakeet was then you will have a much better chance finding a bird that matches both of your needs when you know Kalypso's personality better.

I meant between congos and timneh greys. Sorry for the mix up I just had to leave right then and just finished it quickly.
