Umbrella Cockatoo
Hi,
I am trying to use positive reinforcement with my umbrella cockatoo, Sweetie. I was wondering if anyone knows approximately how many sunflower seeds it is safe and effective to give them in one 20 minute training session. I read that no more than 10% of the birds diet should be made up of sunflower seeds. Thanks!

I use safflower seeds. They are smaller than sunflower seeds, perhaps 1/4-1/3 the size, and my birds actually prefer them :)

I'd say about as many as you want, 20 may be a good number. You don't want to fill the crop substantially and take away from healthier foods.

If you can try using fruit/veggies, safflower seeds, or pine nuts, and almonds it's healthier. I always use a variety of rewards when training, finely chopped into appropriately bite sized pieces. Keeps them exciting wondering what they'll get.

Hi, I saw the safflower seeds without a shell are those the ones that you use? If not can you tell me where you get safflower seeds with shells? thanks a lot.

Nope. They're in the shell. It's good that way, the feel like it's more, because they have to chew them open. You can get them in any bird store I think.

Keep in mind, there are other rewards besides food! Our amazon loves getting kisses, and in lieu of treats for good behavior, he gets verbal praise and a kiss (and is always happy to receive one;)).

My macaws will "work" for affection. They want cuddles more than any food treat!!!
