Microchiping

Have been doing some research here and other places. Can't seem to get a definitive answer. Mango has a leg band, seems to bother him occasionally. And me alot more. I saw him get it caught up in a plastic chain one day and ever since I want it off. I plan on free flying him one day. So I am wondering, has anyone announced a smaller chip or any new "tracking device. I get worried about someone else seeing what Mango will be capable of doing and steal him as well. He is very fond of people and not is not the least bit shy of going over to them.

There is a mini microchip for birds. My galah got one. I'm not sure how big an eclectus is, I know of a person with a caique and she got one, is an eclectus about the same size? They put it into the breast so as long as there's some "meat" there, they can do it (they can't do it with reallylittle birds like budgies I think, but anything with some meat up front they can do it).

EDIT: this is just an identification microchip, not a gps. No idea about gps tagging.

I think Eclectus are a bit bigger than Galahs.
There's a video of a Senegal getting a microchip so I would assume that an Eclectus would be okay getting one.
I'm not entirely sure about the GPS tagging as well, it could be like a dog and cat's one.

Another good option is to use the Aviator Harness or other types of harness. It'll just show people that it would be hard to "take him" outside. I think there's also some flight lines you can use with it.

I absolutely advocate for microchipping. A band can be removed and then you have no way to identify your bird should they become lost or stolen.

The microchip is placed in the chest, and because of that it's advisable to wait until your bird is fully grown and has developed its pectoral muscles.

I saw a gps tracking device on tv the other day, but it was an external thing for putting on a dog's collar. I don't think you can get them implanted (yet?).

Me too! I yet have to find out if I could get Gizmo a microchip. But I think it would save hours and the life of any pet in case they get lost.

When I talked to my vet about it she said that a small cockatoo is about the smallest they could put one in, so for me they could do my Pionus, but not any of my smaller birds, including the IRNs. I dont remember the cost, but I remember the biggest factor would be the sedation used for the procedure.

Because Sam and LAdy are not very tame, they would have to be under a heavier sedation, which is why it would be a bigger cost to me. I should have clarified.

Eclectus parrots tend to be about the size of African Grays. Maybe slightly bigger.

Hahahaha! Well, Bixby is only 1 and still growing, but he already weighs in at around 425 grams. They can range from a little under 400 grams up to 600+ grams, from what I've heard.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I do have a harness and flight line for him, but am going to take it further. He is a ways away yet, maybe in a while they will have developed a GPS device small enough by the te he's ready.
