I have been keeping Parrots for almost 8 years now. And i am very opinionated on what size cage you should have your parrot in (Bigger = Better) Maya is in a king's Cage 506 European style. It's huge. 4 foot Wide, 3 foot Deep, 6 ft 6" High
1" bar spacing, 6mm bar thickness
I mean you could comfortably fit 4 blue and golds or 3 Hyacinths inside.

My 2 Lovebirds are in a 28"W x 22"D x 5'H (half inch bar spacing) And now my sun conure is going to be ready for a cage soon. Now i usually house them in a small cage for the first month or so while they get used to perching and whatnot.
For a Sun Conure i usually start them out in a 18x18x24.

I have a 30"W x 20"D x 40"H that i planned on housing my Sun Conure in. I plan on keeping my Sun Conure in my bedroom. Just not enough space in the rest of the house, and with Maya(B&G) and the Lovebirds in the living room, i need to be mindful of my parents, who are disabled and need help getting around and so moving space is key.

Well, i have a 30"W x 20"D x 40"H for my sun conure, but here's the thing. Firstly, my birds are hardly in their cages during the day, They all hang out on their cage, or the play gyms. I keep the doors open so they can go in and eat at their leisure. My sun conure will be the same way.

I also spend a lot of time in my bedroom as that is where i do my work. So it's not like he will be loney. Maya is in my room a good part of the day on her play stand. Probably 1/3 of the time.
(Maya is great with other birds, Nibblet annoys her cause he thinks it's funny to dive bomb her, then chirps like "Ha ha ")

Anyway here is my Question. That 30"W x 20"D x 40"H is a bit big for my room, and more than enough space for the sun conure. Would it be so bad to keep him in a 20" x 20" x 24"? like i said, i keep the cages open and let the birds go in to eat, and they get locked up at night. Is that still too small? I mean i've seen horrible things and that's why i'm so opinionated about cage size. So id feel guilty, but it's not like the birds going to be in there much besides night anyway.

Please advise me.

Seems kind of small for a sun, but I'll let sun owners speak up.

As far as the mac cage goes I'd say that's average for a big mac. It would be okay for ONE hyacinth, but not near big enough for 3 and certainly not 4 B&Gs.

I guess i was exaggerating a bit about the 506, but it is huge, here is a photo (mine is black)

(only Maya is in the 506)

But anyway, the cage i have for the sun conure is 20D" x 30"W x 40"H, which is ideal, but i have a 20 x 24 x 24, and i was wondering if that would be ok as he will mostly only be in it at night or if i have to leave the house for a few hours
I work from home so the birds are out most of the day either chilling on their cage or on the play gyms

I'm pretty torn on that. My sun started out in a 24x24x30 and I wasn't happy with it, he could jump from wall to wall which didn't seem big enough. Now he's in a 30x30x36. My eclectus is in a 36x48x72.

Mine don't live out of their cages though, so it isn't the same situation. I just know that my sun makes use of every single inch of space he has..

If it's JUST for sleeping an eating, it'd be okay, but if you had to go for vacation or something and they had to be caged, then maybe not

Oh DT, i thought of that, and if i had to leave and they couldnt come with or be taken out as often as id like, i do have that 20x30x40. It's all ready to go id just have to add toys and perches. But i rarely get out because i have no life ^^

Why not save that cage as a travel cage or as a hospital cage if needed? It's always good to have a spare :)
