I love fireplaces, and I've heard that some are fine with birds (obviously not with the bird out and about...) but I wanted to know your experiences. We have a long hall that spans the kitchen and two other rooms, the last of which my caique's cage is in. Normally if I'm worried about something I'm cooking, I'll close the room door, put a standing fan in the hallway, and crack a window int the living room which is at the far other end of the hall by the kitchen. If I'mm really paranoid I'll put a towel at the base of the door.

That being said, I've not used the fireplace in my apartment, but a friend is staying with us until she gets on her feet and really wants to use it. I've told her no because it's wood burning and Huginn comes first, but what are your experiences with fireplaces? I've heard gas fireplaces are better, somewhat like gas stoves, but no one's ever confirmed it. Do you use yours? I'd love to use mine, but I've always planned to wait until we have our own house and Huginn can have a room safe to himself far away from it!

We have 2 small, freestanding electric fireplaces we use worry-free around Kiwi. The one in the bedroom looks like a wood stove and he enjoys sitting in front of it with me (obviously not allowed super close to it). The other one is a mini-unit about the size of a shoebox, and not in an area Kiwi would normally be anyways.

I would be leery of any wood-burning fireplace, unless it was a real emergency need to use it. You can get pretty cheap, and rather realistic electric inserts for wood-burning fireplaces that even put off heat, but pose no risk to a bird (unless the bird gets on the fireplace and burns itself).

This is the "bigger" unit we have-

It's pretty realistic and puts off good heat!

Edit: looks like it's not available anymore actually:( But just search for "electric fireplace" and TONS of options in all kinds of styles will pop up:) Something like this may also be a good option for you:
