Advice Needed - Amazons

Advice is needed on a situation I have that is quite tricky. For years I have had 4 parakeets, 2 cockatiels, and a senegal parrot without issues. My Mom passed last year, and my father gave me the 22 and 24 year old yellow naped amazons they had in addition to my flock. The 24 year old is kinda fiesty, and my father abused him. The 22 year old is nicer, but just screams all the time and doesn't really talk. Anyway, I tried my best at first, taking them to vet, getting them new cages (theirs were covered in smoke), and bathing them because my parents smoked.

Fast forward a year, I barely get time to spend with them both, and still have all the other birds (nine all together). The 24 year old has become very agressive and lunges everytime I clean his cage. About a month ago he attacked my face, and I have scars where he bit me still (blood was everywhere). I know they have been in family for 20 years, but no oe else wants them, I don't have time for them, the aggression issues are much, and on top of things my husband and I look like we are getting divorced and I will have all the birds - possibly in an APARTMENT!

My guts is try to rehome the amazons, and try my best to keep my original flock in tact no matter what. However, I feel horrible, like I failed the Amazons. Not sure I will re-home, but I am wondering if it is the best options for them (with lack of time), and for me (especially with the divorce and maybe moving to an apartment).

It sounds like you gave them a legitimate chance and you shouldn't feel bad giving them an opportunity to go to a home where they fit in better. Amazons are not for everyone, and you have done nothing wrong, in fact you sound like you really tried. They just weren't meant to be, and it's not like you went out and bought them, you inherited them.

I would give them to a reputable avian shelter who are experienced in rehoming parrots. That will give them the BEST chance at finding the *right* homes. Selling or rehoming privately opens the door for flippers and wannabe breeders to take them and further contribute to them being passed from home to home. Do the right thing for these birds and give them to a shelter or sanctuary so they get the opportunity to go to a 'zon'-friendly home
