Hi,
I have a new Macaw and I have several questions I figured I would make one big post about.
My macaw is about six months old right now and I have had her since she was about 2 months and used to go visit her at the store everyday while she was weaning but I have had her home for about a month now but she acted very different at the store than she does at home. She was a lot more out going at the store and would even make attempts at talking, but since I've had her home she has been dead silent not so much as one scream or attempt At a hello. I know it's a big adjustment being in a new home but I'm a little worried she's going to get depressed. At what point should I worry about her.
Also since she has known me basically her whole life at this point she's pretty comfortable with me but gets pretty grouchy even when another person in my family walks by. Does anyone have any tips for socializing her. I have gotten her to the point where she will step up onto another person if they hold their arm out and offer her a treat and I try to do this a often as possible but if anyone tries to touch her while they have her it's bad news, and at this point she hasn't tried to bite anyone buy I would like to not have to put her in a position where she feels like she has to if I ever need someone to help out with her for any reason.
Also last question. How many treats are too many, I have taught her a couple tricks and I will usually just grab a small handful of sunflower seeds and just work with her until I run out but she doesn't seem to be eating as much of her actual food now so I don't want to be over treating her. And does anyone have any other treat suggestions I haven't found anything else she's interested in. I tired the nutriberries and she's doesn't want them at all and I got a whole bag of pumpkin seeds she just spits out.
